CONTENTS MACFORMAT *¢ ISSUE 27 * AUGUST 1995 See page 130 WELCOME Everything you never dared to ask about MACFORMAT... and a few things you never needed to know, probably. ABOUT MACFORMAT ABOUT OUR WRITERS ALEX SUMMERSBY Macrormat’s editor learned what he knows about Macs by using them and reading all he could find about them — including details of brilliant Macs he could only lust after. He still cries over the PowerMac 7100DL he couldn't quite afford. DEREK SMITH Our technical whizz kid used to run a room full of Macs for a school in Norfolk. Now, in keeping with his Action Man image (left), he aspires to a PowerMac PowerBook so, he says, he can enter the train numbers directly into his database... RICHARD HILL Macrormat’s multimedia man cut his computing teeth on an Atari ST with 4Mb of RAM and two floppy drives. Asked what he dreams about, he modestly says ‘Just a PowerMac of some des- cription.’ Bound to be an improvement all right. ROD LAWTON Our HyperCard expert has been drooling over the new all-in-one Performa 5200, but he says he doesn’t really mind what Mac he has so long as it runs System 7.5, because that's scriptable and he’s now getting into AppleScript... MARCUS DYSON Back when he was one of Future Publishing's art editors, Marcus had to beg for a Quadra. Now he works as a graphic designer for a top soft- ware house, and they give him anything he asks for. Must be tough having nothing to hope for. SIZE. DOESN T COUNT... Don’t you hate it when you turn up at your newsagent with just enough money to buy your favourite magazine, only to find that the price has gone up? Unfortunately the cost of paper is rising worldwide, so more and more magazines are having to raise their prices, or cut their page counts, or both. Our enlightened Publisher thought we'd try another way. If you’ve seen MAcForMart before, you might have noticed that this issue is narrower — by trimming some 22mm off the width of each page, we save enough paper at least to put off the evil day. Plus, being the standard A4 size means MAcForMart is easier for distributors and newsagents to handle, and even a little cheaper to mail. So thanks for buying this issue, and stick with us — these are the only corners we're cutting! We are still committed to keeping MACFORMAT the Mac magazine you want to read. ALEX SUMMERSBY elcome again to MACFORMAT, W Britain’s best-selling Mac magazine! Whether you're a veteran or a novice, we'll help you get more out of your Macintosh, whatever you use it for! Every month, MAcrormat brings you tips, techniques and tutorials covering the range of Mac applications, from graphics, DTP, education, spreadsheets and databases to music, comms and games. This month we help you sort out your System, discover the Internet, get to grips with ClarisWorks, and more. We'll bring you features about excit- ing Mac developments and novel uses, accompanied by cover disk programs whenever possible, so you can discover what your machine can do and try things you haven't tried before — like seeing what Plug-ins can do for you. We'll keep you up-to-date with all the Mac-related news, and also keep you informed about the wider issues, the people behind the headlines and the stories behind the stories. This issue, we explore some of the uses that medical professionals are finding for multimedia, and review some ‘body- related’ titles as well! We'll bring you authoritative reviews of interesting and affordable products, with clear buying recommen- dations. This issue there’s everything from the whole range of portable Mac options to language learning programs, plus the latest games, a budget music package and the best new low-cost and no-cost software hot off the Internet. MAcFoRMAT does not review demos or unfinished programs. We review only the finished products you could Welcome to MACFORMAT buy yourself, to help you decide whether to buy or not. MaAcrormar’s covermounted disks and CD-ROMs offer you demos so you can try software before you buy, useful utilities (specially chosen to com- plement features in the magazine), selected shareware programs, games, readers’ contributions and more, every month. ABOUT OUR REVIEWS very MACForRMaAT review is EK designed to inform you in detail what you'd be getting if you bought the product and help you decide whether it’s worth your money. It tells you the essentials, without jargon. MAcFoRMAT reviews only finished products, and we rate them on this scale: @ 80+% means excellent. @ 70+% means well worthwhile, though not really outstanding in its market. ™@ 60+% means good, but with a few shortcomings or some limitations. @ 50+% means acceptable but flawed. @ A rating below 50% means you should think carefully before parting with your money. The Macrormar Classic Award If a product earns a rating of 90% or more, we'll give it a MAcForMat Classic Award. This means what it says: we judge the product to be a classic, a standard-setter of its type, something really special. @ We make everygffort to verify all the information we publish, but products and prices do change. We always quote list prices (RRPs), but street prices do vary. Shop around, and check with the supplier before buying to make sure that the product you're considering will meet your needs. MACFORMATI New card standard for cheaper add-ons & Apple announce more price cuts, new colour printers. Richard Hill reports. New card slot for more choice, better price he first of a new breed of PowerMacs has been launched, incorporating a new type of card slot that is already an industry standard and will become the standard for Macs. This means that Macs will be able to accept a vastly increased range of plug-in expansion cards — adding enhanced graphics or networking capabilities, for example — at much keener prices. PCI (Peripheral Component Inter- connect) is already fast becoming the standard in the Windows PC market. Manufacturers will be able to make one card that will fit in both Macs and PCs — the only difference is in the soft- ware the computers will need to recognise the presence of the cards. So firms will have a much wider market for their cards, meaning they will be able to sell them for less - and mean- ing a better choice for you. The first PCI Mac is the Power Mac- intosh 9500, a top-of-the-range mon- ster costing over £4,500, but cheaper machines — the 7500 and the 8500 — will fol- low shortly. Ultimately, the entire Mac range should have PCI slots. PCI slots will also form a crucial part of the set-up for new Mac- compatible machines from companies like Power Computing. The standard replaces NuBus, previously the most popular card slot for the Mac — but PCI cards will be far cheaper and faster. In the near future, it’s expected that some companies will be making PCI interfaces into which you can slot your existing NuBus card, so you can use any expansion cards you already own with the new Macs, until you're ready to completely make the switch to PCI. Apple’s contribution to your choice of PCI cards will be limited to a set of PCi CARD MAKERS Radius, one of the biggest manufac- turers of Mac expansion cards, are supporting PCI with an entire range of graphics cards, which offer the dual benefits of increased screen reso- lution of up to 1,600 by 1,200 pixels and faster graphics drawing. There are three ranges — ThunderColor, Thunder and PrecisionColor. You can also get a closer match between on- screen documents and the way they print out. Some of the new cards cost as little as half as much as their NuBus equivalents, Radius say — and all are cheaper to some degree. For example, the base PrecisionColor 8/1600 card costs a mere £704. Radius are of course one of the companies that are making Mac- compatible computers (see News, MAcrormart 22), and a combined bundle of a computer and graphics card is inevitable. The industry news- paper MacWeek reports that Radius have approached IBM to manufacture Mac-compatible computers to be sold under the Radius brand (yep, Mac clones made by IBM!), giving Radius the increased potential to break out beyond their graphics professional constituency. Other companies making PCI cards include Truevision (the new name for well-known video firm RasterOps), Avid Technology (of VideoShop fame), Neutral (with a range of network cards), ATI, Linotype-Hell, and Rock- well. And Matrox Graphics, one of the top card producers, are now sup- porting the Mac for the first time. network cards for the time being, while they focus on making the Macs that can use the cards. The Power Macintosh 9500 is tar- geted at graphics and multimedia professionals — it’s twice as fast as the previous top-of-the-range 8100/110. There are two models available, with different chip clock speeds — both have 16Mb of RAM, a quad-speed CD-ROM drive and a specialised graphics accel- erator card from the ATI firm. There are six PCI slots in each model. The 9500/120 costs £4,695 and also includes a 1Gb (1,000Mb) hard disk. The 9500/132, which has a 2Gb drive, costs £5,816 — although there's also a £5,552 model without the video card, so you can get the card of your choice. Apple say that they see PCI as one of the three linchpins of the Mac range for the next several years, along with the PowerPC chip and OpenDoc, the new system which means huge, com- plex applications will be replaced by smaller, specialised components that you can mix and match as needed (for details, see MACFORMAT 26). For more details on the new genera- tion of PowerMacs, contact Apple on 0800 127753. For details on the graphics cards from Radius, call them on 01483 772773. By far the most powerful Mac ever, the 9500 is the first of a range of machines that offer cheaper support cards. APPLE CD-ROM PRICE The new quad-speed CD600e CD-ROM drive from Apple (see Mac- FORMAT 25) goes on sale in August for around £350. It's up to twice as fast as the CD300, meaning smoother playing multimedia. There's also an internal version — the CD600i — that you can swap with your current built-in drive. The previous price for the most basic 630 model was £999. The 630 with 8Mb of RAM and a CD-ROM drive stays at the same price, but its hard drive size has increased from 350Mb to 500Mb. In the wake of the new PCI Power- Mac (see lead story on page 19), the prices of many of the current Power- Macs are tumbling by as much as 16%. The hard disk size of the 6100/ 66 has also been increased from 350Mb to 500Mb. It’s now cheaper to take a Mac on the road as the prices of many Power- Books fall by up to 8%. As with all of Apple's prices, the fig- ures in the table are estimates of what you'd pay — shopping around could save you money on these prices. Sig- nificantly, the 630 is the only Mac in the desktop range not to have a PowerPC chip in it. Could it be the last Mac as we knew them? For example, you'll be able to discuss a piece of video with someone in another country, and both be able to view the video as you talk. TALIGENT SCALES DOWN Taligent are abandon- ing plans to create a new operating system for all major computer platforms, including the Mac (see issue 19). They'll focus instead on CommonPoint, a system that will enable programmers to get their work onto differ- ent platforms more easily than at present. Live video over the Net If you're using the Netscape Navigator browser program to move around the World Wide Web, you'll soon be able to watch video sequences live. At the moment, you have to load the video files onto your hard drive and watch them later. People using the Web — already the richest part of the Internet for graphics — will be able to communicate in even more creative and flexible ways. The development is because of a deal between Netscape and Macro- media to share Macromedia’s software. You'll be able to place files made with Macromedia Director, a top program for creating multimedia, onto the Web so that anyone can watch them live with a new version of Netscape due later this year. It also enhances the position of the Mac as one of the top computers for creating multimedia — much of what you'll see on the Web will have been made with a Mac. Netscape are busily trying to set new standards of what can be done on the Internet. There are already plans to use Adobe’s PDF (Portable Docu- ment Format) system to make the Web look much more profess- ional, with many more type styles available. And the integration of Java, a programming language developed by the Sun firm, means you'll even be able to use small programs like spreadsheets that are built into Web pages. Watch multimedia live on the Internet! These examples were created by Bigtop, Canter, Mythos and Red Dot using Director. * HIGHLANDER ASTRAY Apologies if you tried to use the Highlander bulletin board with our TeleFinder software last issue — the BBS phone number was missing from the Preferences file. The first details of the computer that will replace the PowerMac have been released. CHRP (Common Hardware Reference Platform) is a joint project from Apple, IBM and Motorola, and all three companies will be making their own versions — but IBM now say that they intend to in- clude the Mac Operating System with theirs! CHRP (pronounced ‘chirp’) will be able to run the Mac OS and any of five other operating systems — Windows NT, OS/2, Solaris, Novell Netware and AIX - most of which are designed for specialist use. A brief proposed specification has been released to the rest of the industry to invite comments — a more pre- CHRP will be based on the PowerPC chips used in PowerMacs, with the 604 as the minimum level. To use the Mac OS, you'll still need a customised chip, as the hardware and the operating system work so closely together. It’s expected that a future version of the Mac OS will remove this need, but the first version to run on CHRP will be the System version code-named Copland. Apple claim that new technology makes the Laser- Writer as good as printers that cost far more — they've filed 42 patents just on ideas used in this one printer. Over time, many of the ideas used should make their way into cheaper machines. At the same time as the colour launches are announced to the world, the retail price of the Select 360 drops by 10% to around £1,174. It’sa monochrome laser printer that can pro- duce type and images at 600 dpi. COPLAND: A FIRST LOOK The Mac’s operating system is headed for a radical overhaul, as we reported last issue. The new Mac OS, code- named Copland, is the most powerful yet — although trickery with virtual memory means it’s expected to run comfortably on a PowerMac with 8Mb of RAM. The release date is set for mid-1996. Among the many new features is a new look for the familiar Desktop. Ba ducation Hotline 0171775 4291/2 MACROSCOPE BEHIND THE NEWS This month MAcrormat looks at medical CD-ROMs and Internet health coverage, as well as reporting on the recent Video Positive exhibition of computer art in Liverpool. There’s more to multimedia than entertainment — the medical community is one example of a professional group whose work is being transformed by the new technology. BODY CONTACT For more details on The Cardiovascular System Series, contact Andromeda Interactive on 01235 529595. For more details on the ADAM series of education CD-ROMs, contact Churchill Livingstone on 0131 §35 1751. WEB SEARCH If you have a Web browser, you can view BioNet at: http:/Awww.leeds.ac.uk/ bionet.htm! and the Virtual Hospital at: http://indy.radiology.uio wa.edu/VirtualHospital html n the space of a few years, multimedia has become king in the Mac industry. CD-ROM and, increasingly, the World Wide Web are changing the way millions of Mac users think about their machines. An example of this can be found in medicine, where multimedia is offering new opportu- nities for pooling knowledge. Functional Anatomy of the Heart is the first of a proposed set of modules called The Cardiovascular System Series. Across two CDs, it provides a detailed guide to the heart. Extensive notes and professional photography are ac- companied by a multimedia training course. As the medical student, you use the knowledge you've gained to complete interactive quizzes. Some are not unlike the games featured in the discs covered in our round-up of med- ical multimedia for the home this issue (page 104). But the purpose behind the play is more serious. The American firm ADAM Software produces education software for schools, colleges and medical schools. Its modular programs combine to offer a full portrait of the human body at three levels of expertise. At the top level - ADAM Comprehensive — the disc costs £1,760. ADAM are now using the resources they've built up to bring their brand of education into the home with ADAM: The Inside Story. It’s a CD-ROM that gives a basic and witty introduction to the body, while using some of the material employed in ADAM’s more serious discs (see MAc- FORMAT’S review on page 105). The Internet is also proving useful for medical training. BioNet is a British co-operative where professionals and students share their knowledge, creat- ing multimedia for others to use and learn from. There’s a whole range of ideas being discussed, including using the Maxis game SimLife as an aid to studying genetics. Also on BioNet are MacCycle and MacGut, which were cre- ated at the University of St Andrews using HyperCard, Apple’s pioneering, simple multimedia and presentation program. MacCycle explores the men- strual cycle, with animations that illus- trate the hormonal changes in the body. MacGut maps out the intestinal tract, showing how it breaks up into different areas. Elsewhere on the Web there’s the Virtual Hospital, a mammoth project co-ordinated by the University of Iowa. It’s a resource for doctors and nurses, offering video and audio material on patient care. There’s a list of typical cases with symptoms and X- ray shots to analyse, for example. The Virtual Hospital also includes informa- tion on good health for the public. The sharing of knowledge and re- sources in these projects is a vivid ex- ample of how multimedia technology can create or develop a sense of com- munity among people, whatever the distance between them. RICHARD HILL 3 The Virtual Hospital uses the Internet to offer a giant community health project for professionals and the public alike. thf ore It uses the same principles as many games at times, but the Functional Anatomy CD-ROM is a serious aid for doctors. Video Positive, an exhibition organised by Liverpool-based Moviola, aims to make it even more accessible to the public and artists alike. o many ‘fine’ artists the con- cept of ‘computer art’ has always represented a contra- diction in terms — like ‘mili- tary intelligence’, or ‘political integri- ty’. But as creating digital images becomes more sophisticated, artists are increasingly turning to computers and other electronic media. If you want to see some of the best electronic art in Europe, Video Positive, organised by Moviola in Liverpool once every two years, is the event to attend. Unlike previous Video Positive events, where Amigas featured heavily, Video Positive ‘95 was predominantly Mac ori- ented with approximately half of the artists involved using Macs to some extent in their work. The instal- lations ranged from Deser- ter by Marion Kalmus — a large back-projected and Mac-synchronised display of wide- angle slides — to The Ark by Marty St James and Anne Wilson — a series of monitors displaying partial human/ animal morphs. But the most ap- proachable work for the average non- artist had to be the CD-ROMs. Here are a few samples of the work on show at Video Positive: Bi Anti-rom, published by SASS Collec- tive (UK) — ‘a cluster of randomly ac- cessed audio-visual engines’ including: Soundspaces — ready-made tool boxes for IJs (interactive jockeys); Screen The- ory — interactive video-texts by Sadie Plant and Nick Land; and Underground — audio-visual loops that merge typog- raphy and dance music. Anti-rom was funded by the Arts Council, so it can Die Veteranen is a branching series of gateways to interactive music/sound- scapes and visual ambiguities. Each object or feature in the drawings reacts to a click, playing an animated sequence or moving on to the next gateway. ‘Underground’ — audio-visual loops merge typog- raphy and dance music. Bio- Morph Encyclopedia is published by 4D and available from Moviola at £45. @ Die Veteranen by Eichhorn, [hmels, John and Touma (Germany) — ‘an ex- traordinary game’ with no purpose other than to ‘explore an electronic dream world’. Published by Systhema, Die Veteranen is also available from Moviola at £39.99. @ The Toy Box — various artists (UK). Featuring 20 artists who have all cre- ated small scale interactive artworks ie. ‘Soundspaces’ — ready-made tool boxes for lds (interactive jockeys). Featured on Anti-rom. From Biomorph Encyclopedia, various animal and human morph animations are presented on these pages as still-icons. You can select groups of these to play back linked together as a sequence. on the theme of a toy box, The Toy Box demonstrates the potential creative uses of this newest medium. Funded by the Arts Council, The Toybox is pub- lished by Moviola at only £15.50. dRIA M.I1.C.E. Moviola are currently seeking funding for a Moving Image Centre for Exhibition, to be based in Liverpool. This would be the first of its kind in the UK. MOVIOLA Moviola a
