Information is the name of the game! ABOUT OUR WRITERS ALEX SUMMERSBY Alex's first Mac was an SE/30, and he swears it could run QuarkXPress faster than his present Mac. Mind you, now that he’s editor of Macrormat he’s really reached the dizzy heights and now uses a Ilsi. Thank God for RAM Doubler. DEREK SMITH Macrormat's Technical Writer used to run a room full of Macs, back when he was the computer boffin for a school in Norfolk. Now he’s got just one Centris 610, plus a few extra hard drives and things. Plus a Classic, just in case. RICHARD HILL Rich is MacrorMaT'’s multimedia man, so he had to have a Performa 630 with CD-ROM drive. And he's our news editor, so he had to have a TV tuner card in it to help him keep in touch with the news. And NYPD Blue, apparently. ANDY STORER Andy has been a computer journalist so long that his first Mac was in fact a Lisa. He now has a year-old Performa 475, and he never tires of telling everyone how fast it’s depreciated with all these great new models coming out. MARCUS DYSON Back when Marcus was one of Future Publishing's senior art editors, the Quadra 700 was the most powerful Mac there was. Marcus now works as a graphic designer for a top software house, and just smiles when we remind him. RoD LAWTON As computer books editor in Future's books division, Rod has to produce multiple-hundred-page books, complete with embedded graphics, using QuarkXPress. He's got a llsi. No wonder he prefers tinkering around in HyperCard. BRIAN LARKMAN Macrormat’s graphics tutorial expert, Brian teaches com- puter graphics at a college using high-end Macs. His own Centris was stolen recently, so he had to buy a brand new PowerMac 7100 with the insurance money. Poor guy. ABOUT MACFORMAT elcome again to MACFORMAT, Britain’s best-selling Mac magazine! Your CD or your bonus disk (on UK copies of MACFoRMAT) contains all the software you need to log on to Compu- Serve and enjoy one month’s free connec- tion, except for the cost of the phone time. Before you go any further, you do need a modem attached to your Mac to make use of CompuServe. To get started, double click the Installer icon to install the software onto your hard disk. Once this has finished, open the new CompuServe folder. The first thing to do is to set up your account. Double click the Signup icon and click Sign Me Up. Enter the agreement number and serial number printed on the front of the floppy disk, or included with the CD-ROM as an insert. You'll also need to click on UK as your country. Click Proceed and fill out the next form with your personal details, including a valid credit card number. This is important. At the end of one month’s free connection your credit card will start to be charged a monthly fee. If at any time during the first month you wish to cancel your membership, you can phone the freephone number. Alternatively, you can click on the Go to Online Service icon and select Cancel Membership. You will then not be charged. Continue with the forms and select your nearest city from the list, or select London, Once you have entered all your details, the software will attempt to log on to CompuServe. If it fails, go through the above procedure again, and if still no luck, phone the free helpline. CompuServe in2es8 = ly sul if wemome to Nene Forum (Sew member! ‘% sal &, sér=8 Once connected, you will be given an ID number and password, which you need to write down. You can now quit the Signup program and double click the CompuServe Information Manager. Richard Hill reports. r PowerlNic LOW-pric pple has released two afford- able new ‘entry-level’ Power- ‘Z Macs — the first machines . based on the second generation of PowerPC chips. Both of the new ma- chines come with quad-speed CD-ROM drives built in (twice the speed of previ- ous Apple drives), and the range starts at just £1,374 — including the monitor. Each machine is called a Performa rather than a Power Macintosh. The Per- forma 5200 will attract more attention because of its bold ‘all-in-one’ case de- sign. While other current Macs are a slim box with a monitor on top, the 5200 brings the two into one case — a bit like the earliest Macs, but all on a stand so you can position it however you want. Designed by Apple’s Jay Meschter, the new look is intended to reflect the grow- ing multimedia direction of the Mac. With a high-quality 15-inch monitor built-in, the new PowerMac looks more like a TV than a computer. The Performa 6200 offers the same processing power as its cousin, but the case design is the same as the existing Performa 630, and the machine will cost £100 less than the 5200. The new PowerMacs, which some people have been nicknaming ‘Power bead bebe beed bad bn) (tbabad Ltt od te tt. aoe Performas’, offer the most tempting prospect since the Performa 630, chang- ing our perception of the PowerMac as a machine only for businesses. The remark- ably low prices give you more oomph for your cash than ever before, and with built-in quad-speed CD-ROM drives the focus is firmly on multimedia. Both Performas will be able to use the TV Tuner card that enables you to watch TV and grab video pictures on your Mac. It’s proved popular with 630 buyers. Both machines use the 603 chip, the first of the new PowerPC chips, which is cheaper to make than the existing 601 chip used in other PowerMacs. With the main chip running at 75MHz, the new machines are roughly as fast as a 6100/60, the first PowerMac, but cost less and have more features than their pre- decessor did originally. More details of these exciting new machines are in this issue’s PowerMac feature, which starts on page 40. Meanwhile, the Performa 630 DOS Compatible also goes on sale for £1,699. As well as the 68040 chip and double- speed CD-ROM drive the standard 630 has, there’s a DX2/66 PC chip, which enables you to run programs for the operating systems DOS and Windows. = a> It comes with 12Mb of memory - the Mac chip gets 8Mb while the PC has 4Mb. But you can choose to give your Mac access to all 12Mb for added power, while the PC borrows memory from the Mac but runs more slowly. If you already own a 630, this doesn’t mean you can now get a PC chip to fit into your machine — the PC chip is an in- tegrated part of the DOS Compatible, rather than being a slot-in card. ch) Six deals with companies to make Mac-compatible computers are signed but still not announced, according to Apple. With the timing of any announcements being left to the individual firms, there's a hint that at least one company is already well- known for making PCs... Apple’s MPEG video card, which enables you to play video CDs and create high- quality video clips, should be out in the summer. Expect a price of less than £200 — but you'll only be able to use it if you have a 630, 5200 or 6200 and a TV Tuner card. NEW PoWwERMACc SET-UPS The new Mac generation will come in a range of memory con- figurations, with plenty of extras available depending on which one you go for. These prices are Apple’s own estimates of what you can expect to pay: Memory/Hard disk/Features 5200 8/500/CD 8/500/CD/Plus 12/500/CD/TV/Plus £1,474 £1,549 £1,799 6200 £1,374 £1,449 £1,699 All versions include ClarisWorks 3.0, Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing, Spectre Supreme and clip art disks. The Plus machines include Grolier Encyclopedia, Guinness Disc Of Records, Microsoft Dinosaurs, Leonardo The Inventor, San Diego Zoo Presents The Animals, Rosetta Stone and Oceans Below - all on CD-ROM. MACFORMAT ¢ ISSUE 25 ¢ JUNE 1995 19 _ SOFTWARE BOOM Sales of Mac software in Britain and Western Europe are higher than ever, according to figures released by the Software Publishers Association. Programs worth a total of $46.5 million were sold between October and December in 1994 — that's a 36% increase on the same period in 1993. he Mac leisure scene is set to reach new heights after more than 100 Mac games and multi- media titles were announced at the recent European Computer Trade Show (ECTS). The Mac is attracting serious interest as an entertainment machine because of the spectacular increase in the use of CD- ROMs on the platform and the games- playing potential of the speedy Power- Mac. One in four of the multimedia computers sold in 1994 was a Mac, according to research firm Dataquest. CD-ROM drives are becoming an accept- ed part of the typical Mac set-up, and the Bandai Power Player — which is due in the next 12 months — will also be able to play a type of Mac CD-ROM (see Mac- FORMAT News in issue 24). The Mac is be- coming as good at entertainment as it is at business and creativity. The variety of titles will also increase as more come out, showing the Mac is capa- ble of running more than Myst and Sim- City 2000. Developers and _ publishers announcing programs for the Mac in- clude LucasArts, Virgin, Time Warner Interactive, Mindscape, Dorling Kinders- ley, Simon and Shuster, Interplay, Acti- vision, Sales Curve Interactive, Cyber- dreams, Blue Byte Software, Infogrames and Maxis. The twice-annual ECTS, held this time in a packed hall at London’s Olympia, is a show where new games for all computers and consoles are shown to dealers and industry professionals for the first time, before they go on sale later in the year. 20 MACFORMAT * ISSUE 25° JUNE 1995 See | i bi >> is SYSTEM UPDATED If your Mac uses System 7.5, you can upgrade it to version 7.5.1 by ordering the System 7.5 Update 1.0 CD-ROM or disks from Apple. You can contact the service for the price of a local phone call — the number is 0345 002000. he first Mac-compatible com- puters from US firm Power Computing are now available in the United States. The com- pany has put together an attractive package that shows how competition between it, Apple and other firms will benefit you. There are three machines in the range — the Power 80, 100 and 110. All three have been confirmed by Apple as 100% compatible with Mac hardware and software. Distribution arrangements in Britain and the rest of Europe are still being discussed, but an announcement can be expected soon. The prices of the Power systems start from $1,995 (around £1,245) for the Power 80 compared to about $2,400 for a broadly equivalent Apple PowerMac — monitors cost extra. All machines have at least 8Mb of RAM, at least 356Mb of hard drive capacity (and up to 4Gb - 4,000Mb), a quad-speed CD-ROM drive and built-in Ethernet networking sup- port. Power is offering a broad range of options to help you customise your choice as much as possible. As well as Apple’s System 7.5 Mac OS, the computers come with an enticing selection of extras — ClarisWorks 3.0, the Quicken finance program, 300 TrueType and PostScript Type 1 fonts from Bit- stream, and Utilities, Contact and Up-To- Date from Now Software. Power is also putting together optional discounted bundles of software. These are aimed at business, multimedia, publishing or home and education users. Each machine in the Power range comes with a 30-day money-back guar- antee and free telephone technical sup- port for life. The company has already said it intends to follow up the launch with more machines later this year as Apple brings out Macs based on the PowerPC 604 chip (see our PowerMac cover feature starting on page 40 for more on the 604 chips). For more details contact Power Computing in the United States on 00 1 512 258 1350. APPLE POTS CUSTOMERS FIRST A reshuffle of personnel at the top of Apple has con- firmed the company’s new emphasis on areas like multimedia and the home and education markets. The company intends to focus on offering tailor- made solutions for these markets as well as publish- ing and small businesses, rather than simply relying on its innovatory products. As well as a change at the top, which sees the de- parture of Apple vice-president lan Diery, the struc- ture of the company has been changed in an attempt to make Apple more responsive to its customers. The changes should see Apple continuing in the direction that has seen it offer cheaper, more power- ful Macs, throw its weight behind multimedia and license out its operating system (Mac OS) and hard- ware to other companies for the first time. Now that PowerMac technology is established, Apple should be concentrating on software and its OS. Apple is also looking beyond the computer and is putting together a plan to make Mac OS available to companies making other types of electronic devices, such as video recorders. It’s talking to companies about establishing a standard design for hardware, in the same way that Apple, IBM and Motorola have agreed on a new computer specification, Common Hardware Reference Platform. The first fruit of a new era in Mac computing, the Power range, is confirmed by Apple as 100% compatible with Macs. Multi- media CD-ROMs are being used to add to the experience of standard music CDs to make a hybrid format called CD Plus. Bands and artists getting involved with the Mac music scene include REM, Tom Petty, Squeeze, Ace Of Base, Moby and Sarah McLachlan. The cornerstone of the development is the Interactive Music Track, a support group that offers music professionals the software and advice they need to make CD Plus discs. Apple is also supporting Open Music Apple is to launch a quad-speed CD- ROM drive, the CD600. With a drive of this speed fitted to your Mac, multi- media programs — especially ones that show video clips in large windows - will run more smoothly. Apple sells more CD-ROM drives for the Mac than any other firm, so its em- bracing of quad-speed is a signal that this is the new standard for Mac CD-ROM. (The new Performas, the 5200 and the 6200, are already using quad-speed.) So you can expect software publishers to create more ambitious programs to get the best out of your Mac. The price of the drive in Britain is yet System (OMS), developed by the Ameri- can firm Opcode. It’s a software system that enables musicians to use the Mac with any instrument - keyboards, drum machines or synthesizers, for example - as long as it has MIDI connections. MIDI is the industry standard way of connect- ing computers to musical instruments. OMS will be incorporated into a ver- sion of QuickTime to come later in the year. You'll be able to compose on your MIDI instruments and save the music as a QuickTime file, enabling you to incorpo- rate original music into your video clips with little hassle. Compiled by Richard Hill. CD-RON Project 4.0 any businesses need to make plans, whether it’s for M writing and launching an ambitious new program or throwing the party afterwards. Microsoft Project 4.0, avail- able later this month, aims to provide a complete solution for as- sembling the timescale and logistics of a plan and creating charts to make a presentation. Project 4.0 now looks much like Microsoft's Office suite of soft- ware. You can exchange information between these programs easily with the OLE (Object Linking and Embedding) system. @ Price: £411.25. Out: this month. @ Requires: LCII or better with System 7, 8Mb of RAM and 12Mb free hard disk space. @ For more details contact Microsoft on 0345 002000. redia Vision’s Reno CD-ROM drive is intended to be a com- .¥ Ei plete package for newcomers to multimedia. Looking more like a personal stereo than a typical drive, it actually fulfils both roles. There’s a carrying case, so you can use it to listen to music CDs on the move. A separate piece that clips on the back pro- vides the drive with SCSI connections so you can hook it up to your Mac and use it as a double-speed CD-ROM drive. Some basic toolkit software is also included, which you can use to play audio CDs while it’s connected to your Mac. Reno’s customer-friendly, hi-fi feel works — the whole package is inviting and easy to set up, with a well-written manu- al. The drive itself doesn’t feel too sturdy, though, so it may not stand up to being taken outside a great deal. SoftCore has bundled it with its own ArchIS program to offer a complete archiving package. With ArchIS, you can catalogue any document — whether it’s already on your Mac’s hard drive or on a piece of paper (which is where the scanner comes in). Entering a few basic details as the docu- ment is made part of your records enables you to search for it later. Installing the software is a pain — it’s been made more complicated than it need | t may only be twice as long as its own Using ArchiS means you can Catalogue electronic and paper docu- ments as though they were the same thing. ArchiS File E16 SUNS; 7 LOOD ape he name of Three by Five refers to T the typical size of index cards, but this is no indexing database system. The program is a renamed version of Corkboard, which enables you to note down and organise your ideas. It uses the metaphor of pinning cards to a board, but on your Mac. Freed from the restrictions of drawing pins and bits of paper, you can arrange the cards in ways you couldn’t do have been through poor documentation. But using the program once it’s up and running is straightforward. If you're tired of shuffling piles of paper around trying to find that essential article or report, this could be the answer. ® Price: £816.63. MACFORMAT ON-LINE You can find the World Wide Web version of MacrorMAT simply by pointing your browsing program at http://www. futurenet.co.uk/ t’s become the most talked-about computing phenomenon in years, and there’s no sign of interest in the Internet flagging. Millions of people have joined the computerised web of worldwide communication in just a few months, while the number of pages on the popular World Wide Web service is estimated to have doubled in three months. But heavy demands are being placed on the infrastructure of the Internet — the computers that make it work. The Net de- pends on computers called servers, which store the data you can access using your Internet programs on huge hard drives. Big as they are, though, even servers run out of room — but with the increasing hunger for information, the companies and universities that run servers have little option but to buy more computers to keep up with the demand. Traditionally, servers have run an op- erating system called UNIX, which is powerful and fast but difficult to set up and use. A range of PowerMacs called Workgroup Servers are matching the power of UNIX systems, while offering the famed ease-of-use of the Mac OS.
