MACFORMAT * ISSUE 28 * SEPTEMBER 1995 | WELCOME | ABOUT OUR WRITERS ALEX SUMMERSBY Alex's first computer was a Kaypro II (anyone remember Kaypro? Or even heard of 'em?). He learned about Macs by using them, and is still impressed by windows, icons and folders, but his favourite Mac interface feature is aliases. DEREK SMITH Our technical expert is so good at his job that he’s being poached by Future Publishing’s Mac Services department, so he's been spending half his time solving the company’s Mac problems. His favourite feature right now is multitasking. RICHARD HILL Rich says his favourite bit of the System is the Audio CD Player, and the bit that makes him go ‘woo!’ is QuickTime VR, but the most underused part is AppleGuide. Naive of us really to expect our multimedia man to say just QuickTime... MARCUS DYSON Back when he was one of Future Publishing's top art editors, Marcus was renowned as a Mac graphics whizz. He's now head of the multi- media division of a leading software house. His favourite feature? QuickTime, he says obligingly. RopD LAWTON Our versatile HyperCard expert has been setting up his own business this month, so it's been a very opportune time for him to remind us how much he knows about spreadsheets and utilities too. His favourite Mac feature: configurability. OFIR GAL A new face for this page but a respected com- puter journalist with a special interest in the Mac, Ofir speaks Hebrew, Arabic and probably a whole lot of other exotic languages. His favour- ite feature must be WorldScript (see page 98). You? Speaking of faces, yours could be gracing this page (or not, if you have no features fit to be seen in public...)! We're always looking for free- lance writers who can write well. As a first step, send us details of your particular Mac expertise. Welcome to MACFORMAT Everything you wanted to know about MACFoRMAT... as well as a few of our favourite (Mac-related) things... ABOUT MACFORMAT elcome again to MACFORMAT, W Britain’s best-selling Mac magazine! Whether you’re a veteran or a novice, we'll help you get more out of your Macintosh, whatever you use it for! Every month, Macrormat brings you tips, techniques and tutorials covering the range of Mac applications, from graphics, DTP, education, spreadsheets and databases to music, comms and games. This month we help you sort out your System, discover the Internet, master those spreadsheets, and more. We'll bring you features about excit- ing Mac developments and novel uses, accompanied by cover disk programs whenever possible, so you can discover what your machine can do and try things you mightn’t have tried before - like Mac-based image-editing. We'll keep you up-to-date with all the Mac-related news, and also keep you informed about the wider issues, the people behind the headlines and the stories behind the stories. This issue, we see how Apple is at the heart of a new form of networking across Europe, and bring you more about Apple’s newest multimedia machine... We'll bring you authoritative reviews of interesting and affordable products, with clear buying recommen- dations. This issue we test the top graphics tablets, a scanner with bells and whistles, a multi-lingual word pro- cessor, some remarkable music CDs and much more besides... Macrormat does not review demos or unfinished programs. We review only the finished products you could buy yourself, to help you decide whether to buy or not. Macrormar’s covermounted disks and CD-ROMs offer you demos so you can try software before you buy, useful utilities (specially chosen to complem- ent features in the magazine, including over 80 ‘clip photo’ images this month), selected shareware programs, games, readers’ contributions and more, every month. ABOUT OUR REVIEWS very MACFORMAT review is EK designed to inform you in detail what you'd be getting if you bought the product and help you decide whether it’s worth your money. It tells you the essentials, without jargon. Macrormat reviews only finished products, and we rate them on this scale: @ 80+% means excellent. @ 70+% means well worthwhile, though not really outstanding in its market. ™@ 60+% means good, but with a few shortcomings or some limitations. @ 50+% means acceptable but flawed. @ A rating below 50% means you should think carefully before parting with your money. The Macrormar Classic Award If a product earns a rating of 90% or more, we'll give it a MAcForMat Classic Award. This means what it says: we judge the product to be a classic, a standard-setter of its type, something really special. We make every effort to verify all the information we publish, but products and prices do change. We always quote list prices (RRPs), but street prices do vary. Shop around, and check with the supplier before buying to make sure that the product you're considering will meet your needs. Apple boss on new direction Apple executive Michael Spindler has been speaking about the recent changes of direction and emphasis within Apple. As we re- ported in MACFORMAT 25, Apple are to concentrate on areas like multimedia and the home and education markets, as well as traditional strongholds like publishing. Spindler told journalists in the United States: ‘We don’t want to be simply throwing Macs out there to do office work.’ Saying that ‘the Mac is by definition a multimedia machine’, Spindler believes Apple shouldn’t try to make the Mac all things for all people — just another com- puter. ‘This isn’t diapers or soap’, he said of selling com- puters. ‘We need to make computers that better under- stand their users.’ Spindler reiterated Apple's efforts to overcome the shortage of parts that is besetting the entire industry —at a time when there is more demand for Macs and other PCs than ever (see the ‘Computer boom’ margin note on this page). This means you should find it easier and quicker to buy the Mac you want over the coming months. MACFORMAT ° ISSUE 28 * SEPTEMBER 1995 21 a Free PowerBook upgrade offer 20 MILLION Macs! Plus: | l a) Tal 3 1S oT, Ae | the latest on the Pippin super-console? Richard Hill reports. | Could science fiction be about to turn into a feature of everyday life? Radio networks could transform the way we use computers. We look at Apple’s new venture. For a comprehensive round-up of your choice of portable Macs and digital assistants, see last issue's cover story. While Europe is making progress towards getting cables for networks installed, it’s the United States that are setting the pace. You can read about their Information Superhighway project (the NII) on the World Wide Web. Point your browser at http:// sunsite.unc.edu/nii/ toc.html any Macs are now linked together or with other types of computer for all sorts of reasons — your Mac could be part of a network ina sophisticated office set-up or linked to a friend’s for a game of one-on-one Marathon. And the size of the Inter- net, the biggest network of all, is ex- ploding. Using your Mac for commu- nicating is becoming a crucial part of everyday computing. It’s against this backdrop that Apple are spearheading another bold move into personal communication, with the help of a medium that’s regarded almost as quaint against brash new- comers like television and CD-ROM. Radio could hold the key to a series of developments that might change the way we use computers — and even fundamentally affect the design of computers themselves. Networks are limited at the moment Radio could hold the key to changing the way we use computers. because even if you have a portable computer, you still have to find some- where to plug it in before you can join a private network or get onto the Net. But imagine using a computer any- where. You could carry around a personal digital assistant, like an Apple MessagePad, hooking up with a cen- tral computer or network — wherever you are in the building, and for what- ever information you need. Out on the street, you could exchange com- plex information with anyone you meet who has the same device — for example, go into a shop and have a bang-up-to-date catalogue loaded onto your machine for viewing later. And radio networks would be faster and cheaper to set up than ones where you have to install physical wires. This science fiction situation can be- come real with radio networks — and here’s how it works. Each radio station a _—_ , fio Appie you listen to (BBC 1FM or Classic FM, for example) has a radio frequency allocated to it. It’s allowed to broadcast on its frequency over an agreed range. Radio Four can transmit over the entire country, while stations like Birmingham’s BRMB are restricted to a local area. And organisations like the police also have channels set aside for them. In Europe, a system called Hiperlan is being developed by Apple and their partners GEC Plessey and Advanced RISC Machines. With Hiperlan, a range of frequencies (between 5150- 30 MACFORMAT ¢ ISSUE 28 * SEPTEMBER 1995 MACROSCOPE Once virtually ignored by the computing community, the Newton is coming into its own as new technology means portables are in demand. 5300 MHz, fact fans) is given over for computer communication. The range remains limited to 50 metres for the moment, but an established standard to build on will exist. The United States is thinking even bigger. The National Information In- frastructure (NII) is the official name of the much-touted Information Su- perhighway — an America-wide net- work. Again, Apple are involved in the setting-up of the wireless part of the NI, which will enable community net- works to emerge. For example, all the schools in a town could share comput- er information across the airwaves. Or everyone in the town could get access to data stored at the local library. And yes, one of the ideas Apple are proposing is that the American system should use at least the same frequen- cies as Hiperlan, so the computers of the future could work across both con- tinents. The idea is to make the new frequencies open to all. But Apple aren’t getting so involved in all of this for nothing. A widepsread radio networking would add another string to Newton’s bow. Newton is the the design that Apple’s MessagePads and a few other devices like Motoro- la’s Marco are based on. The design is by far the most-used in the PDA mar- All the schools in a town could share computer information across the airwaves. ket - Apple have a 60% share. Up until now, Newton has suffered perhaps from being an idea ahead of its time. Not only were there teething problems with technologies like New- ton’s handwriting recognition, but Apple found it difficult to get across why you might need a PDA. But developments like this may mean a corner has been turned. De- signs like Newton — where the baggage of desktop computing is stripped away until you have a simple, useful tool — promise to become more relevant as we move into the next century.
