Turn off the Macintosh SE/30 and continue. In the following section you will learn basic Macintosh skills so you can finish setting up your Macintosh SE/30. Learn basic Macintosh skills If you have not used a mouse, pull-down menus, or other Macintosh features before, take time to learn about your computer. You'll be using one of the disks contained in the Setup Guide packet, Your Apple Tour of the Macintosh SE/30. (If you have used a Macintosh computer before, skip ahead to the next section, “Prepare Your Hard Disk.”) It’s not necessary to complete the entire tour to acquire the skills you need to finish setting up your computer. At the beginning you'll learn how to use the mouse. Then you'll see the Main Menu. Plan to complete the first two sections on the Main Menu: = “Howto Use This Tour” = “Finding Your Way Around” These sections will take 15 to 20 minutes to complete. Before you start, read all the instructions here to get a clear idea of what you'll be doing. 1. Insert the disk Your Apple Tour of the Macintosh SE/30 into the disk drive, metal end first, label side up. Ina few moments, you'll see a display welcoming you to the tour. (If you turned off the computer earlier, insert the tour disk and tum the computer on now by pressing the on/off switch on the back.) 2. Enjoy the tour. Hold the mouse with the cable pointing away from you 3. When you finish the section “Finding Your Way Around,” click the Menu button. During the tour you'll learn how to use the mouse to click. 4. When you get back to the menu for “Finding Your Way Around,” click the box labeled Main Menu. 5. On the Main Menu click the box labeled Quit the Tour. You'll see a message asking you to confirm that you want to quit. 6. Click Yes. The screen will go blank, the tour disk will be ejected, and in a few seconds you'll see the icon with the question mark again. Now you're ready to continue setting up your Macintosh SE/30. Prepare your har disk If your computer started up again and presented the desktop on the screen after you quit Your Apple Tour of the Macintosh SE/30, your hard disk already contains the m files the computer needs to start up. You can skip this section and section 4; go on to the “What Next?” section, If your computer has only the disk icon with a blinking question mark on the screen after you quit the tour, then you may need to initialize (or format) your hard disk before you can use it. Follow these steps: 1. Insert the Macintosh System Tools disk into the 3.5-inch disk drive. You'll find the disk in the Setup Guide packet. Ina few moments, the desktop appears with the System Tools icon in the upper-right corner. If another icon appears below the System Tools icon, your hard disk has already been initialized. You can skip the rest of this section and go on to section 4. 2. Select and open the System Tools icon. Click the icon to select it, then choose Open from the File menu. (Or you can double-click the icon—a technique you leamed in the tour.) € file Edit View Special System Tools a Here TOK ak To orate 2 system Fete soph OSE See westalee Tosnent Rasa Me vataer Srpt L 3. Another dialog box appears giving you a chance to change your mind; it tells you that the initialization process erases the whole disk. Don't worry, there’s nothing on your hard disk to erase. 5. Click the Initialize button to start the process. In 5 to 10 minutes a message tells you that the hard disk has been successfully initialized. (While you're waiting, you can read ahead in the next section of this guide, “Install Your System Software.”) 6. Name the disk and click OK. Type in any name you like for your disk. There will be a short delay after you click OK before the arrow pointer appears again 7. Click Quit. You'll return to the same screen you started from and see the System Tools window open on the desktop. (Notice that an icon for the hard disk you just formatted also appears in the top-right corner.) If you have problems, see Chapter 8, “Hard Disks,” in the Macintosh System Software User's Guide. Install your system software Now that you've initialized your hard disk, you need to install the system files the computer needs to operate—including files that let you use a printer. Installing system software In the System Tools window on your screen, you'll find the Installer icon. 1. Select and open the Installer icon. The Installer's welcome screen appears. <> Welcome to the Apple Installer ‘our Macintosh needs certain software to start up. ‘The Installer places this software on your disk in the System Folder. wisafade “Easy Install” chooses the software Apple recommends and creates a disk which can be used to start up your Macintosh. (Customize” if youare sure you want to override those recommendations.) The Installer presents two choices for installing system software: Easy Install and Customize. You may eventually want to customize your system software, but for now you'll use Easy Install. 2. Click OK. The Easy Install dialog box appears. cee eee ah Fal | Click Install to |e Macintosn St/30 system sortware | | + All Printer Software | onthe nord isk nomen | [© Yoer ara 1k ef 3. You'll see a box describing the status of the installation process, along with messages listing the various parts of system software being copied onto the hard disk. The Installer needs to copy software from more than one disk onto your hard disk, so you'll have to swap disks several times, When it's time to swap disks, the computer will eject the disk from the disk drive and display a message telling you which disk to insert. 4, Follow all the instructions displayed on the screen. The installation process takes a few minutes. When the Installer is finished, a message will appear to let you know the installation was successful and to ask you if you want to install on another disk. For now, you don't need to install system software on other disks. 5. Click Quit. Ina few seconds you'll see the desktop again. If you get some other message, try the procedure again. If it still doesn’t work, see your authorized Apple dealer. 6. Choose Restart from the Special menu. Choosing Restart ejects the Macintosh System Tools disk and restarts your Macintosh SE/30 from the hard disk. For more information about installing system files, read Chapter 9, “Startup Disks,” in the Macintosh System Software User's Guide. What next? If you haven't done so already, please fill out your registration card and mail it in.
