Cave Lava And Icky Things is a fan-made scenario for Bungie's Marathon series, the trilogy of first-person shooters released for classic Mac OS in the mid-1990s. As a scenario, it ships as a set of map and resource files loaded by the Marathon engine to deliver new levels rather than as a standalone executable.
Format
Marathon scenarios package custom maps, textures, sounds, and scripted terminals that the original Marathon engine loads at runtime. Players supply their own copy of the engine and drop the scenario files into place to play.
Theme
The scenario's title points to its environmental palette: cave systems, lava hazards, and hostile creatures, drawing on the dungeon-and-monster end of Marathon's level-design tradition rather than its station-corridor settings.
Community context
The Marathon community produced a long tail of third-party scenarios for classic Mac OS through the late 1990s and beyond, ranging from short map packs to full conversion projects, of which this release is one entry.
