Wheel of the Teachings is a 1999 gentle point-and-click adventure by Brian Kelley, published by CompleatMac Software, that weaves Buddhist philosophy into its exploration. Players walk through painted landscapes searching for hidden wheels, each representing a spoke of the Buddha's Eight-Fold Path.
Gameplay
The objective is to find and collect every hidden wheel scattered across the game's hand-painted scenes. Each wheel stands for one spoke of the Eight-Fold Path, and for every two wheels recovered the game unlocks one of the Four Noble Truths, gradually revealing the structural ideas of Buddhist teaching as you progress.
Themes and Content
Along the way the game presents quotations from the Buddha's sayings, mantras, and sutras, framing the adventure as a contemplative experience rather than a test of reflex or puzzle-solving skill. The pace is deliberately calm, leaning on atmosphere and reflection.
Engine and Presentation
Wheel of the Teachings was built in SuperCard and uses static painted scenes navigated with the mouse. A 640x480 monitor is strongly recommended so the artwork displays at its intended size.
System Requirements
68k or PowerPC Macintosh running System 7.0, 7.6, or Mac OS 9, with a display capable of 640x480 resolution.
