About

Water is an obscure Mac shareware game whose single-word title makes it hard to track down across the surviving archives. It belongs to the mass of small, often single-author Mac releases from the late 1980s and 1990s distributed through Info-Mac, sumex-aim, and user-group disks before being rolled into preservation sites like Macintosh Garden.

Theme

The title and surviving binaries point at a water-themed puzzle or simulation -- variants in the genre include pipe-routing puzzlers, fluid-flow simulators, and aquarium screensavers. Without a recoverable readme or About box on the surviving copy, the precise genre is hard to pin down.

Macintosh presentation

Following the conventions of its era, Water almost certainly uses a single document window, the standard System file menu, and small monochrome or 8-bit color graphics. The application is a 68k binary, distributed in StuffIt or BinHex form on bulletin-board services and FTP mirrors.

Compatibility

Expect compatibility with System 6 through Mac OS 9, with the application running under the 68k emulator on PowerPC machines. There is no Carbon or Mac OS X build known to survive.

Preservation

Common-word titles like Water suffer particularly badly from the loss of original distribution context. The binary has outlasted its readme, its registration address, and most of the discussion that would have surrounded its release on USENET and BBS networks of the time.
