About

Moria is the classic Macintosh port of UMoria, a turn-based text roguelike inspired by Tolkien's Mines of Moria. Released in 1993 for 68k Macs running System 6 through 7.6, players descend through procedurally generated dungeon levels with the goal of defeating a Balrog at the bottom.

Tolkien-Inspired Dungeon

Moria predates and heavily influenced Angband, and its dungeon-delving formula echoes through later commercial titles, most notably Blizzard's Diablo. Levels are randomized, items are unidentified, and death is permanent.

Mac GUI Adaptation

Unlike its terminal ancestors, the Mac build offers a windowed interface with menu access to commands while preserving the classic ASCII map and keyboard-driven play that roguelike fans expect.

Compatibility Notes

The port targets 68k architecture and runs natively on System 6.x through 7.6. A known issue causes the game to quit unexpectedly when running under Classic mode after entering minimum starting attributes.

Roguelike Lineage

As one of the earliest free, source-available roguelikes, UMoria seeded a generation of dungeon crawlers and remains a touchstone for understanding the genre's design vocabulary.
