Spiderman 2 in IMAX! Troubleshooting 26 posts Jun 30, 2004 — Jul 25, 2004
IMAX and Sony are in talks to release Spiderman 2 in IMAX within the next few weeks!

After seeing Harry Potter in IMAX (my first hollywood imax film) I cannot wait to see spiderman! It is THE PERFECT imax movie.

Also... if you have kids take them to see the IMAX version of Harry Potter... it blows their minds... you know... in a good way
Alright! I can watch the movie cut horizontally about 45%. Whoo!

Mike
I saw Jurassic Park on an IMAX screen years ago in San Antonio on a family vacation.

It was very cool.

It was also shot 1.85:1 so you didn't lose much of the frame.

I don't see the point, the movie was not filmed in IMAX so you are not getting a better picture. Also the bulb and projector are different so the picture ends up darker.

And the biggie, most of the damn screen is BLACK!

But, dude... it's IMAX!!!!!!

Too bad it's a movie not worth being seen. Do you like spider-man? Yes? Read the comics then! (My pet peeve over comic books turned into movies is obvious, right?)

Not all the comics are worth reading though. Batman is one of my fave comic heroes, but there have been long stretches where the stories and villains are incredibly weak.

"Not worth being seen?" Hardly.
It's official now... they are going to be releasing Spiderman 2 in IMAX on July 23.

Are people just not impressed with the fact that there is going to be an IMAX version of Spiderman 2?!!! On some MACNNr's advice I took my nephews to see Harry Potter in IMAX last month and was so impressed that I have been a total IMAX geek ever since.

I've done a little research about the complaints that I have seen related to IMAX DMR releases and a lot seem to be based on old information. For example...

IMAX DMR films originally were edited to be shorter than their 35mm counter parts. This was due to the physical limits of the IMAX projection equipment at the time. The equipment has since been updated and IMAX DMR films are identical (as far as edits) to the 35mm releases.

I have read complaints that some found IMAX DMR films to be blurry. In my personal experience I found Harry Potter to be as least as sharp as a regular theater's projection is. It has been suggested that perhaps in the earlier versions of DMR films IMAX had not yet perfected their technology. This makes sense to me... if the first IMAX movie took three months to re-master and they can do the same thing in 2 weeks now... they must have made plenty on improvements in the technology.

IMAX DMR films are letter boxed. A friend of mine who saw the Matrix movies and Harry Potter in IMAX said that the image was more impressive with Harry Potter. He said that the aspect ratio of the Matrix movies was wider than the aspect ratio of Harry Potter. Simply put, The Harry Potter movie used more of the screen than the Matrix movies did. Spiderman is going to have the same aspect ratio of Harry Potter (so I am told). For my own eyes at this ratio the top edge on the IMAX screen was not obvious at all. Actually I'd say the perfect size for me

IMAX DMR sucks on Dome Screens. Yeah I get that... those things are kinda hard to watch.

IMAX is just to big. This one I don't get at all. Going to the movies was a lot more impressive before the days of DVDs, big screens and digital audio at home. I for one am tired of the "am I going to get a good screen" crap shoot at today's multiplexes. With IMAX I know I am going to get THE BEST SCREEN AND SOUND possible. It's nice to be overwhelmed for a change I didn't mean to sound like a commercial

I am not saying that every film should be released in IMAX, but films of the huge special effects variety should. The Day After Tomorrow... there's a film that needed IMAX... and a better plot. Van Helsing? don't you mean Van Awesome... also weak on plot.
And one more thing, IMAX has developed a technology that allows them to convert animated films into 3D! The Polar Express will be released in December using the technology. Can you imagine Finding Nemo 3D? That'd be sweet.

In my humble opinion Spiderman 2 will be the perfect IMAX movie. I cannot wait to swing along the streets of New York.

Yeah sorry I got way to into this... BUT WHAT DO YOU GUYS THINK? Maybe I am just impressed by it because I am a civilian I am surprised that more people are not excited... or at least curious about this stuff.

Have a good one.
I am so excited to hear the news of Spider-Man 2 at Imax. I've already seen it once and will definately go back to watch it at Imax. I saw Harry Potter and was very impressed with the quality of the movie. I was afraid it would be too large but it was just right. And I thought that the picture was sharper and the sound was much better than the a normal Regal theater. My local Imax is owned by Regal, by the way. I look forward to seeing The Polar Express in 3D at Imax.

Catwoman also starts at Imax on the 23rd. I guess its time they add a few screens!
Will the real IMAX publicity agent please stand up?

Me and Kenny are too poor for IMAX. Prolly wait 'til Spidey hits the dollar theater.

Haha... I know. I think using a mac has given me some kind of under-dog complex. But hey... most of my family and friends have macs now.

"Take Another Spin in IMAX!

Spider-Man 2: The IMAX Experience to Open on July 23rd in Select IMAX(R) Theatres

Digitally re-mastered for The IMAX Experience(R)

LOS ANGELES, July 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Audiences will be able to take another spin in IMAX(R) as Spider-Man 2: The IMAX Experience opens in select IMAX Theatres beginning July 23, 2004. This critically acclaimed film from Columbia Pictures, which has already generated more than $500 million in box office worldwide since its release, has been digitally re-mastered with IMAX's proprietary IMAX DMR(R) technology into the unparalleled image and sound quality of The IMAX Experience(R).

Spider-Man 2 moviegoers will experience this blockbuster sequel in a whole new way, on screens towering up to 8 stories high, surrounded by 12,000 watts of pure digital sound. With IMAX DMR, the image quality of the 35mm motion picture is digitally enhanced resulting in images that are every bit as big, sharp and stunning as those films originally produced in the 15/70 format. In fact, once the IMAX DMR process is complete, the Spider-Man 2: The IMAX Experience film format will be 10 times larger than the original. The sheer size, combined with the IMAX projection technology, will provide moviegoers with an immersive, extraordinary cinematic experience.

"When you have a movie like Spider-Man 2, it makes sense to offer audiences an opportunity to experience the film in this incredible format," said Jeff Blake, Vice Chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment and President of Worldwide Marketing and Distribution.

In Columbia Pictures Spider-Man(R) 2, two years have passed since Peter Parker (Tobey Maguire) walked away from his longtime love Mary Jane Watson (Kirsten Dunst) and decided to take the road to responsibility as Spider-Man. Peter must face new challenges as he struggles to cope with "the gift and the curse" of his powers while balancing his dual identities as the elusive superhero Spider-Man and life as a college student. The relationships Peter holds most dear are now in danger of unraveling as he clashes with the powerful, multi-tentacled villain "Doc Ock" (Alfred Molina).

Spider-Man(R) 2 reunites the cast and filmmakers from the first adventure, including Tobey Maguire, Kirsten Dunst, James Franco, Rosemary Harris and J.K. Simmons, under the leadership of director Sam Raimi and producers Laura Ziskin and Marvel's Avi Arad. Joining the ensemble cast are Alfred Molina as Dr. Otto Octavius ("Doc Ock"), Daniel Gillies as John Jameson, Vanessa Ferlito as Louise, Dylan Baker as Dr. Curt Connors and Donna Murphy as Rosalie Octavius.

Columbia Pictures Presents A Marvel Enterprises/Laura Ziskin Production Spider-Man(R) 2 starring Tobey Maguire, Kirsten Dunst, James Franco, Alfred Molina, Rosemary Harris, Donna Murphy and J.K. Simmons. The film is directed by Sam Raimi (Spider-Man, The Evil Dead). The screenplay is by two-time Oscar(R) winner Alvin Sargent (Ordinary People, Unfaithful) based on the Marvel Comic Book by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko. The screen story is by Alfred Gough & Miles Millar and Pulitzer-Prize winning author Michael Chabon. The producers are Laura Ziskin (Spider-Man, Pretty Woman) and Avi Arad (X-Men, Daredevil).

I like IMAX mainly because the seats are usually nicer and the theater is at a very nice slant.

The movie quality isn't all that much nicer, but it might be interesting.

Back in my day we didn't have all those fancy colors and pages. We sat around and made up stories that our families would half forget but would pass on to their children nonetheless. And dammit, we liked it!

I did for the first one and will for the second. I loved the first, but I probably would have been a little more critical if I would have had to pay $16 for my GF and I to see it.

I also have issues with seeing movies in theaters. I saw I Robot last night and couldn't get the laughing dork sitting behind me out of my head!

The movie quality is not much nicer? Try and blow a 35mm print up that large and see what happens hehe

are there going to be kids standing in line wearing red and blue pajamas fighting kids wearing trench coats with vacuum cleaner hoses strapped to their backs?

I've been working on my costume for the past 2 years... one word... lasers.

Yeah I don't really get the dressing up stuff... or applauding down at the multiplex... if no one is there that made the movie what's the point? It's just clapperbation.
Who's going?
Dang, it's not coming to Milwaukee.

Argh.

I've said it before... I'll say it again... they need more IMAX theaters. You are missing out in Milwaukee!
Freaking best IMAX movie ever. You will not be disappointed... everybody in the theater was ooooooing and ooohhhhhhhing whenever Spider-man was swinging through the streets. You will be 100% impressed by this movie in IMAX. It really is like seeing another movie.

WAYYYYY better than the Matrix movies because the aspect ratio is not as wide.

awesome.
