Best Domain Transferer?

Best Domain Transferer? Networking 8 posts Jul 1, 2004 — Jul 2, 2004
Hi,

Does anyone have any experience with transferring a domain name to another registrar? What company does it the fastest and easiest? I know some of the time it takes is from the losing registrar. I want to transfer a domain from a foreign registrar to a US based one.

Thanks!
I used godaddy.com. Simple, easy. Not much to say except that.

I used godaddy.com also. Completely painless, very easy to understand, and only took a few days. And they're quite cheap for domain registration, too. I love 'em.
be aware that godaddy (far as i can tell) doesn't do DNS for you (like register.com does). namecheap.com is, obviously, cheaper than register and they do DNS.
but if you have your own nameserver ready to go or someone else can do it for you, then godaddy will probably work for you.

I can't stress enough how this company is simply THE BEST. Absolutely the most comprehensive, no hassle, online tools for managing your domain.

And I just checked their website, and they've lowered registrations to $8.50 a year, and $7.50 for no hassle transfers.

THE BEST REGISTRAR, EVER!
I have a question, I have 2 domains on dotster, and one on registercheaper.com, if I move them all to dotster, and pay their fee, will I have to buy the domain again when it runs out from the original registration date, or from the transfer date?
Also, how much downtime is there?

The transfer should extend the registration by one year, so you would need to renew one year from the original expiration date.

There should be no downtime for you site, but you will not be able to make modifications to the domain itself for about one week before the transfer and for a few days after the transfer is completed.
My wife just went through changing her hosting provider. We had heard so many stories about botched transfers that we transfered her domain name to godaddy first, then after that was complete, we moved her DNS to her new provider.

I think godaddy is a good deal. Yeah, your hosting provider may provide regiatration too, but the hassle of not having to change it justifies spending the extra $8/yr on registering someplace insependant of your hostinf provider...
