Removal of iconarrows on aliases?

Is it possible to remove the small arrows that stick to the icons of aliases? I remember I disliked them very much back when I was running Windows 95, which had the same behaviour, but then found out how to remove them by editing the registry. Can the same be done in OS X?

I havn't tried since the upgrade to 10.2 but the way I did it and the way I beleive it will work now is open SystemIcons.rsrc in an icon application such as Iconographer from MScape Software and open up the alias arrow from there and edit it out. Save, Logout, back in and it should work fine.

i had trouble saving the file, would it possible just to delete the icon out of the rsrc file? Or will something go wrong when i go to make an alias?

Just out of curiosity, how will you figure out if something is an alias if you edit out the arrow? In OS 9 it was easy to tell because the name was italicized but theres no difference in X...

What I would do is make the arrow a little smaller and transprent. that way you know it's an alias and the icon is less obtrusive.

Well in some cases there is no need to know something is an alias. I personally don't care if it is one so I chose to remove the arrow.
