I see two types of metal cocoa apps.

1. Safari and iChat

2. iMovie and iPhoto

The first type "allows" third party themes to change the metal pattern (I'm guessing in the Extra.rsrc), plus change the widgets.

The second type only allows new widgets.

I understand that to Apple, it doesn't really matter because these two types end up looking the same out of the box. But what is going on here? Which type has the Jaguar brushed metal switch turned on?

Its just that the apps havent been updated to use the new brushed metal option..
Yeah, they were made before MAcOS X 10.2. iTunes is the same, but that's because it's brushed metal is part of the itunes.rsrc.
So iPhoto 2 and iMovie (which as far as I can tell is a complete rewrite), don't use the Jag metal? WTF? Jag's been out since September! They couldn't update it between then and now?

Well, there's a good reason:

iPhoto/iMovie = compatible for both 10.1 and 10.2

iChat, Calculator, Address Book, Safari, etc = 10.2 only
Yeah, so many people whined about the $129 Jag upgrade that Apple doesn't want all their apps to require it... even though they are freeware.

They're missing out, if you ask me - the improvements in Jag are well work the price.
well if you really don't like it, you can try searching this forum. someone made a nice edit to iphoto and enabled the gui of the main window to be in "normal" metal instead of apple's "fake ilife" metal. search for iPhoto in this forum and see what you find.
Don't forget about the third type: Quicktime. It still has floating buttons...
