Do you like the bubbles in Aqua scroll bars?

Do you like the bubbles in Aqua scroll bars? Troubleshooting 37 posts Feb 5, 2003 — Feb 10, 2003
I'm curious because I'm working on new scrolls, and making bubbles is a lot of effort, so I wonder what people prefer.
Those are bubbles? Don't look like bubbles, but no, I've never liked that inside texture.

That's a loaded question for me - yes, I like them in Aqua, but the tradeoff for theming (no pressed state for thumbs) blows.
Hmm... I think I can live without the bubbles Maybe you could post a quick screenshot...
I've always hated them actually. They look like poorly tiling textures. I actually changed mine to be solid once and they looked way better.

Also - No pressed state appearance sucks ass.

I popped the bubbles on my sys a long time ago. Bubble = Ick

Makes it a real modern SmoothStripes.

I like the bubbles in Aqua and BBX but I don't mind if they are not there.

I voted yes though.
Yep, they made OSX feels more alive.
zazou - can you share that theme?
nice sunken widgets!

i'm hopnig it has a graphite version..

It is a personally hacked version of Smooth Stripes and I won't distro it without permission from Boozo.

I sent him the file for review. He can post it if he feels it is OK.

I think the bubbles were fine at first but now, as the stripes, they're kinda getting dated. I think that clear glossy bubbleless scrollbars would be the best choice for your new SmoothStripes revision.
The bubbles look really kewl after a big, fat spliff!
I always thought they were a clumsy mistake, like Apple couldn't figure out how to make smooth clean bars.

Exactly! They just look sloppy as hell.

Somebody PLEASE post a aqua / smooth theme w/ the bubbles removed.

The smooth scroll bars look SO much nicer it's ridiculous.

And I so wish somebody could figure out a way to hack a pressed state appearance to those damn thumbs..
Ok, it's about 50,50.. I wanted to keep them secret until the release, but here is a screen of how my "jaguarish" scrolls look like:

So which one looks best? I have already made scrolls with bubbles, but it would be very easy to take away the bubbles.
One thing that is troublesome about scrolls is that the caps bubbles will often not match with the bubble fill, so you get what looks like a deviding line. Look in the screenshot on the left scrollbar and you see that it look pretty bad at the end. Without any bubbles this wont be a problem..

For SmoothStripes, please use the scrollbar on the left. SmoothStripes is meant to be Aqua minus stripes? So, scrollbars without the rippling effect make sense.

If you make scrollbars that are flat, without bubbles, could you offer them as part of a separate theme / a supplement to SmoohStripes?

I like the current Mac OS X ones better with bubbles, but man those scrolls look nice! I'm still torn between the two I'd still say go for the bubbles, they add a nice touch for some reason

So when is this new jaguar-ish theme coming out? Will it have the complete glassy look, even for window widgets? Now that would rock
OH! So those are bubbles!?!? Get rid of them. I also thought that was just bad tiling on apples part. Looks much bette smooth.
Nice scroll bars!

Agreed on both points: the left scrollbar seems more in the SmoothStripes spirit, and is more beautiful.

Plus, keeping different options (like the current different opaque, opaque/square and new variations like scrollbars, bubbles etc) for the theme would be great!

I completely agree. (Including not know what they hell bubbles were!) Turf 'em.
Damn.. what to do? If I made a variation of all themes without bubbles in the scrolls, that would be 16 variations! Which will not work.. Should I comprimise and make the bubbles/ripples more subtle? Now they have 15% opacity, perhaps I should make them 10% or 5%?

And for you who is wondering, the new smoothstripes theme will complete all gui that is still in 10.1 aqua style and make the whole jaguar look complete.. It will be done perhaps over the weekend, so maybe on monday.. I only have the scrollbars left.
Including titlebar widgets?

Yes.
i'm all for unbubbly scrollbars, simply because 'smooth' would mean, well, smooth.

the bubbly ones are bumpy, not smooth..

'titlebar widgets'.. does that mean sunken widgets like in 10.2.3 brushed?
I hope not, in fact, I'm looking for a theme that gets rid of the sunken widgets.
I'm getting bored of Aqua based themes... We need more sleek original themes like BBX Mercury X. I haven't used another theme since BBX Mercury X came out, though I did try Milk 1.5 for a few min, and changed right back.

I like the bubbles, but they aren't necessary.
I'm going to go for bubbles in this release. I might offer a bubble less version in the future.

The theme will not get rid of sunken widgets in Brushed apps. But I think you will like the new ones.
Max

There is talk of some changes in 10.2.4 that might affect theming. Any word on whether the new and improved SmoothStripes will work on 10.2.4?
