Cupertino, Calif. -- If your new low-cost Mac comes with System 6.0.6 and you think you've now got Apple's latest and greatest in system software, you're wrong -- time to head back to the dealer for 6.0.7.
System 6.0.6, which incorporates a new Sound Manager and other code supporting the new machines, was scheduled for release this week. But Apple recently discovered two rare but annoying bugs. One could, under certain circumstances, cause the Mac to indicate, erroneously, that it had lost its connections with an AppleShare server or a printer. The other sometimes caused the Mac LC to fail to recognize its keyboard until the mouse was moved.
The problems have been fixed in a new release called System 6.0.7, Apple said. Units now in distribution and inventory in the United States are being "reworked" to incorporate the new system, Apple said, but it cautioned that some copies of 6.0.6 might slip out.
In Europe, System 6.0.6 will be released with a Startup document to fix the bugs while Apple works to localize the newer version.
