I'm using 2 more or less cheap possibly Chinese adapters, but I've never used any of the settings on either of them (always on the drives).  [However, I've never actually gotten a drive to work with either of them - I actually may be able to use the adapter even more passively - setting up a 50-to-80 to 80-to-50 pin adapter so that I can actually test the adapters on a known working drive.  But I can't believe it's both of the different ones I have and not the drives (they always power up fine).  I'll work on this over the next week or so.]
