Hi,

I just acquired a 40SC in its original state from end of 80s. I thought this might be useful as a reference.

Luckily the Service Source for this hard drive family (20SC, 40SC, 80SC, or 160SC) is still available: http://tim.id.au/laptops/apple/misc/external_hard_drive_sc.pdf so it is easy to see how the enclosure can be opened.

Sadly my drive came with broken clamps for the power supply:  :(

The 40SC has a 5 1/4" Quantum SCSI drive in it (other members of the family have 3 1/2" drives):

In typical Apple style of that time the drive can be disassembled mostly without screws, everything is clamped to the chassis. Even the fan assembly:

Detach the LED cable:

The drive mechanism itself is screwed onto its carrier. The carrier can also accept 3 1/2" drives:
