I wonder if the original poster doesn't have the original Apple 17" Multi-Sync Color Display. This was identical to the Apple 16" Color Display, except that it supported multiple resolutions, where the 16" only supported 832 X 624.

Hmmm. Unconfirmed report that Apple's Model number was M2494.
