Last time I moved my office I dutifully locked my scanner before packing it... and then completely forgot about it. I spent the better part of a day trying to figure out why it wasn't working before remembering to unlock it. Fortunately it didn't explode, but the time wasted was probably worth more than the original cost of the scanner...
