Nope, didn't work any better via making an image in Disk Copy and copying from that.

I discover that what I really need is Apple Software Restore, which I had on a drive somewhere from the Developer's site, but as could not make head nor tail of it, I decided to give it a miss. Much quicker to do a full install than to work through all of that complexity. This is happening now on my 2400c.
