This sounds like SCSI voodoo. 

Do you have a terminator on the EN/SC? A cheap passive terminator will be fine. Have you tested the SCSI 25 pin <> 50 pin cable with any other device? Install SCSI Probe or similar to identify which SCSI IDs are in use (the internal drive may have a non-standard ID).
