I was hoping it might be something like dust but if it won't spin a CD I'll need to take it apart to get to the lens. And as I mentioned, once I remove the bottom plate and the front bezel I can't get any further. The innards won't budge. I can't see what's holding it all in place.

It won't even boot a CD so I guess we can rule out any kind of software issue. I have the drive from my 5400 attached to it now and it's all working fine so whatever the issue is, it's in the drive and not any other part of the system.
