I don't know how much bandwidth you loose from the transceiver, but most Ethernet cards in this era are 10BASE-T cards, which max out at 10Mbps (about 1280kb/sec) theoretical limit. The max I have seen is 66kb/sec.

Fortunately, it beats the heck out of floppy disks.
