A few comments about this...

1. I was an AOL subscriber back in the day, having used it on 68Ks when version 2.x was current. I also used it on OS 9 on my clamshell until I got a DSL connection. AOL occasionally will phase out support for older versions. I had been using 2.7 on a Mac Plus (!) as late as 2001. However, it no longer worked when I tried connecting in mid-2002. Given the fact nine years have passed since then, I'd guess support for 3.x and other older versions has ceased. The last time I connected to AOL was in 2004 with 4.x.

2. Although I'm a bit fuzzy on the specifics, I do remember AOL being a bit quirky on OS 9 in terms of accessing the modem (the clamshell's internal 56K). I recommend a reinstall of the OS followed by an install of the AOL client. Of course, this is dependent on the software still being supported. Introduce your extensions and control panels one at a time to isolate potential conflicts.

3. Just for clarification--I'm assuming you have a PPC-based Duo?
