I have absolutely ZERO Mac Emulator experience, what OS do they run under?

Are they each an OS in their own right?

Will they co-exist equally well with X & ubuntu installed and can I avoid installing/running any version of DOS or Windows?

Except maybe SoftPC and MSDOS for DOS! }
