I hacked a Toshiba caddy-load CD drive unit into my CD SC case in place of the original Sony. It lives underneath my SE/30 on my desk at work. The original Sony unit would spin up but wouldn't recognize any discs I fed to it. I still have the Sony drive bagged up in storage and I didn't make any permanent mods to the case at all so I could put it back together if I ever found a way to repair the original drive unit.
