Sounds to me like a SCSI issue. The audio cable should not cause freezing or prevent it from booting disks...although I don't remember there ever being an audio cable on SCSI optical drives.
Check to make sure the internal SCSI chain is terminated properly and the SCSI is not the same as the internal HD(s) or attached external SCSI devices (to be safe).
