Yeah i'm going to go ahead and get the bus pirate or https://www.sparkfun.com/products/9857.
I'm leaning toward the Open Logic sniffer because it has the ability to look at 16 channels. The Bus pirate is really neat though, cause it'll automatically figure out what its talking to on the fly (including RS232/RS422 -- but not RS485 unless i have the transciever).
