You could alternately try to feed a hollowed out short length of flexible plastic pipe around the fastening loop of the spring. The hollowed out flexible plastic pipe is the sort of thing you get when strip the insulation off the end of a small gauge piece of electrical wiring. This may or may not work. I have not tried it.
