The internal spring is fine as that's a typical coil spring, the problem is the top spring, that's a leaf spring i.e a piece of sheet metal, and it gets bent upwards. That's the main problem. I'd say if the head needs fixing as a result of sitting in the raised position for many years, that should be fixable by adjusting the internal spring only. If the drive head has been bent up by a person trying to clean the head, that would be where the top spring fix is required. With both of my drives I think the problem was caused by person trying to clean the head.
