How about soldering a SIMM socket where the on board chips were?

I suppose it would have to be surface mount, but it could be done, couldn't it?

It would be a bit messier looking, I suppose, but more easily removable (and perhaps even a bit more reliable, since the extra length of the wires going underneath could do bad things to the signals running through).
