I guess it was used to run the guide for a reason, as it is probibly buggy and crash prone to begin with.

What could that reason be though? why didn't they use the same OS as on the 128k system disc?

Why don't you email Steve Jobs and ask him?

But according to Jobs and "Apple Inc" nothing existed before OS X and G4s. Right? OS 9? What's that?
