And not to mention the media will start to degrade over time. That is becoming a big problem with vintage reel-to-reel tapes, the ferric oxide, and other materials used to make the tape is starting to fall apart, flake off, turn into goo.
This is also true of the adhesive holding the splice-tape to the audio tape. I got a box full of 1/4" home-recorded tape a few years ago, and the splices were falling apart on the ones I looked at. The actual material on the tape seemed to be intact, however.

Unfortunately, I've come to find out that everything degrades with age eventually.

Well, that's why were here I guess; to keep things in working order and to learn to repair things that weren't necessarily meant to be repaired.
