elcome to Academic Press Dictionary of Science and Technology, CD-ROM
W Version 1.0, an electronic dictionary with a sophisticated browser and search
engine that gives you instant access to information from the convenience of your
desktop. Complicated searches that would be impossible to carry out with the printed book
now take only a fraction of a second and can be done from within your word processor.
This booklet describes the procedures for installing and opening the Academic Press
Dictionary of Science and Technology. It is assumed that you are familiar with basic com-
puter techniques, such as scrolling, resizing windows, and running several applications con-
currently. For instructions, consult the manuals provided with your computer. Information spe-
cific to the CD-ROM version of the Academic Press Dictionary of Science and
Technology can be accessed bv selecting the About option from the Help Menu.
SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
To use the Academic Press Dictionary of Science and Technology CD-ROM, your system
must meet the foUowing requirements:
• MPC Standard PC or compatible computer (386SX or higher processor) running MS-DOS
4.1 or higher and Microsoft Windows 3.1 or higher operating systems with a minimum of 4 MB
of RAM, a VGA or SVGA (256 colors) monitor, CD-ROM drive with Microsoft MSCDEX 2.0 or
higher, and mouse or pointing device.
• Macintosh LC or higher computer, 68020 CPU, 16 MHz or faster, running System 7.0 or higher
operating system with a minimum of 4 MB of RAM, a color (256 colors) display, and compatible
CD-ROM drive with Foreign File Access installed.
Both versions also require approximately 4 MB or less of available hard-disk space for
the program software, and supporting files and memory-buffer space. If you wish to hear the
spoken pronunciations, you will also need an audio board plus headphones or speakers.
GETTING STARTED
If you already own an application with the Complex browser and search engine, the installa-
tion procedure will add the new reference book to your existing appLication in the default
directory. Make sure that all of the books are installed in the same location.
INSTALLATION FOR MS-WINDOWS
I. Start Windows in Enhanced mode and insert the compact disc into the CD-ROM drive.
2. In Program Manager, choose Run from the File Menu.
3. In the Command Line Box, type D:\SETUP, where D is the letter representing your
CD-ROM drive, and press ENTER. Follow the instructions that appear on your screen. Both the
application program and fonts will be installed and a group called Academic Press will be
created in your Program Manager.
4. To install QuickTime for Windows, choose Run from the File menu. In the Command
Line Bar, type D:\QTW\SETUP, where D is the letter representing your CD-ROM drive, and
