Read Me Page 1 of 3 Printed: Thursday, August 4, 2022 1:49:26 PM Greetings, BBEdit Users! This version of BBEdit is the first public release of a program that has been over two years in the making. During that time, BBEdit has undergone continuous refinement and improvement. BBEdit offers the following as its strengths: • High quality. BBEdit has achieved a remarkable level of stability for freeware; it has received years of in-house and external testing. The user interface is the result of extensive user feedback and polishing. • File size limited only by available memory. BBEdit's default partition size is 512K of RAM. This can be set as low as 256K, to make BBEdit the ideal constantly-resident editor for small to moderate tasks, or turned up as high as necessary to edit many large files or perform large-scale search-and-replace operations. • No hard limit on number of files open. The number of files that BBEdit can have open at once is limited by available memory, and can be increased or decreased by adjusting BBEdit's partition size as appropriate. • Easy manipulation of multiple files at once. An "Open Several…" command makes it possible to open multiple files from different folders at once, and the Save and Print commands can operate on all open files at once. Multi-file searches can also be limited to the set of open files. • Strong multi-file search capabilities. Under System 7.0, BBEdit can use On Location™ 2.0 as a search engine for fast, large-scale searches. A "Batch Mode" provides a way to accumulate search results for easy viewing and browsing. BBEdit can also search by straight directory scan, examining open windows, or examining the search results. A "Find and Replace All Matches" feature provides capability for multiple-file search and replace. • Pattern ("grep") searching. Matching patterns can be constructed so that strings other than exact literal matches can be found and replaced; for example, converting Pascal comments to C comments, or locating all occurrences of strings which begin with a "P" and end with "er". • System 7 awareness. Besides supporting all of the basic System 7 functionality such as 32-bit mode, virtual memory, and the like, BBEdit also takes advantage of specific System 7 functionality wherever possible in order to either improve performance or to improve its appearance. This is done without sacrificing System 6 compatibility. BBEdit also includes help balloons for most of its menus and dialogs. • High performance. Try and enjoy. Why Believe Me? I'm not the only person who says nice things about BBEdit; the following quotes are …
