Set your up Macintosh SE/30 This is a quick guide to setting up your Macintosh® SE/30 computer. Even if you have never used a Macintosh before, all you need to do is follow these instructions. More detailed instructions for the setup procedure appear in Chapter 1, “Getting Started,” in the Macintosh SE/30 Owner's Guide. It is not necessary to refer to the manual unless you want a more thorough explanation of any step listed here. You'll also find important safety information in the owner's guide. Connecting the power cord 1. Plug the socket end of the power cord into the power input unit. Power input unit On/off switch 2. Plug the other end of the power cord into a three-hole grounded outlet. Connecting the keyboard and mouse 1. Plug one end of the keyboard cable (both ends are the same) into the port on the right side of the keyboard. 2. Plug the other end of the keyboard cable into either one of the two small ports on the back of the Macintosh SE/30. 3. Plug the mouse cable into the other small port on the back of the Macintosh SE/30. You may prefer to connect the mouse to the keyboard, using the second port on the keyboard. It’s up to you. Here are two possibilities: Turning it on 1. Press the on/off switch on the back of the Macintosh SE/30. On/off switch A beep lets you know the computer has started. A yellow plastic packing disk will eject automatically from the 3.5-inch disk drive. 2. In a few moments an icon with a question mark appears on your screen. “* By the way: If you see something other than the question mark icon on your screen, someone may have already prepared the internal hard disk for you. Turn off the Macintosh SE/30 and continue. In the following section you will learn basic Macintosh skills so you can finish setting up your Macintosh SE/30. Learnbasic | Macintoshskills If you have not used a mouse, pull-down menus, or other Macintosh features before, take time to learn about your computer. You'll be using one of the disks contained in the Setup Guide packet, Your Apple Tour of the Macintosh SE/30. (If you have used a Macintosh computer before, skip ahead to the next section, “Prepare Your Hard Disk.”) It’s not necessary to complete the entire tour to acquire the skills you need to finish setting up your computer. At the beginning you'll learn how to use the mouse. Then you'll see the Main Menu. Plan to complete the first two sections on the Main Menu: = “Howto Use This Tour” = “Finding Your Way Around” These sections will take 15 to 20 minutes to complete.
