An All EHCOIOaSSing Astronomy Pr ogram ‘ 2
“SKY TRAVEL,’ known as the fastest, friendliest and most popular
astronomy program for personal computers, was created by Deltron
Ltd. and first published by Commodore in 1984. Deltron was founded by
three friends, Dr. Frank Covitz, Dr. Clif Ashcraft and Dr. Fred Ancker, all
chemists. With becoming modesty, they decided to model the universe
as their first software product; Clif fashioned it, Frank iteezs itinto
the Commodore 64, and Fred wrote the book.
They describe each other as follows:
Dr. Frank graduated from Harvard with a Ph.D. in Chemistry. As a
student, he supported himself partly by playing pool while he
entertained himself by working with the astronomers at Harvard
Observatory on the development of a guider for their large telescopes.
Sky Travel Developers: Dr. Fred Ancker, | In 1974, he wrote a 3-part article with Dr. Clif for Sky and Telescope
Dr. Frank Covitz, and Dr. Clif Ashcraft (March/April/May) on auto-guiders and deep-sky photography. Frank
also wrote an account of the early history of “SKY TRAVEL” for Toronto
PET User Group magazine in May 1985. He is recognized as a pioneer
in computer music, and has simply too many interests to list.
Dr. Clif graduated from University of California (Berkeley) with a
Ph.D. in Chemistry, while he studied astronomy on the side. Clif has
been grinding lenses and built telescopes since childhood and became
interested in the use of computers in astronomy when using trigono-
metric ray tracing on an IBM 1130 to design a 10-inch refractor for the
Sperry Observatory at Union College, N.J. Clif isan accomplished
amateur actor and has a tolerable tenor voice, wh…
