Type / Creator Database v3.1 $10 shareware By Ilan Szekely With a lot of help from Daniel Azuma & Nikolas Kovalenko Home page URL <http://www.angelfire.com/il/szekely/index.html> And <http://www.geocities.com/il/SiliconValley/Bay/5677/index.html> December 6, 1997 911 new entries, giving a total of 17,863 code pairs. ___________________________________________________________ Permission to transfer to others: Type / creator Database may be included in any BBS or CDROM, as long as it is presented in complete form, with documentation. I request to be notified of any such inclusion. E-mail: ILANS@VMS.HUJI.AC.IL snail mail: Ilan Szekely P.O.B 3942 Jerusalem 91039 ISRAEL ___________________________________________________________ Background Every Macintosh program has two four character codes associated with it - its Type and Creator. The latter is unique to each program and enables the Finder to attach documents to their parent applications. This database tries to compile as many codes as possible. The latest version is always available at my HOME PAGE and FTP site: <http://www.angelfire.com/il/szekely/index.html> <http://www.geocities.com/il/SiliconValley/Bay/5677/index.html> <ftp://vms.huji.ac.il/mac_comm/> Mirror sites: <http://www.islandnet.com/~quill/FileTC/TCHome.html> <http://www.ugcs.caltech.edu/~dazuma/shareware.html> Apple has a code registration service which supplies more data if you know a code, but does not list codes. Here is an extract from Apple's FAQ: Q Will Apple give developers a list of Creator and File types that have already been registered? A Unfortunately, no. We don't make the information in the Creator/File Type Registration database available. You should be aware, however, that you can use the search form to search the database to see if a Creator type has been claimed. ... And here they point to my Home Page :-) Look at their sites http://www.info.apple.com/dev/developerservices.html http://dev.info.apple.com/cftype/main.html (Please watch my WWW sites, as these URLs may chage. It is not in my hands ;-) PS - Apple DID change the URL. Please look at my home page for the latest URL. Comment - WHY does Apple "hide" this information? I assume that their database includes thousands of UNUSED codes - because companies Pre-Register codes for future use. ___________________________________________________________ So here is my latest collection of codes. Now 17,863 entries Ilan Szekely started it all. He collects and maintains the data and program for this database. Daniel Azuma wrote the Database interface program. So the information can be presented as a ($10 shareware) program with a nice user-interface. P.S. The wonders of Internet - We live on opposite sides of the globe (11 hours time difference!) but we managed to do this joint venture with the services of E-mail alone. Nikolas Kovalenko donated his list with many thousands of entries, and keeps sending in more. Mikael Grounes donated a list with …
