URL Relayer Stéphane Madrau — madrau@kagi.com http://www.multimania.com/madrau What’s this thing ? This software is designed for MacOS versions before MacOS 8.5. If you use MacOS 8.5 or above, this software is completely useless for you. MacOS 8.5 introduces new files: Internet location files. These files have an icon like this one: When you open such a file, your web browser is automatically launched and the correct web page appears. You will find more and more of these files, because some software authors are adopting them quickly for giving their web page or their email address. But, what if you don’t have MacOS 8.5 ? You will see a blank icon, like this one: and if you try to open such a file, nothing will happen but a standard error. The purpose of URL Relayer is to let you see the correct icon for these files, and to open them as if you would have MacOS 8.5. You will be able to go to the address inside this file by just double–clicking on it. For this, you will need to have InternetConfig. Installation : Once Internet Config is installed and correctly configured, you won’t have to do anything more. Just place URL Relayer somewhere on your disk (I recommend the Utilities folder, but after all, you’re free…). Then, forget it. When such an Internet location file will appear, you won’t even notice that you can double–click on it to have your browser correctly launched. All is invisible for you. Notes for developers : If you are using these files for giving your Web address or your email address, you can add a ‘STR ’ resource, id -16397 in the file. This string will be seen when the file is double–clicked in place of the standard error string. In this text, you can explain why the user cannot open the file, and what he can do to avoid this error. You can place the address of your Web page in it, or an address where he can download URL Relayer. See the examples joined to this archive to have an idea of what can be done. You can also distribute URL Relayer with your software package. URL Relayer is free, for both users and developers. You will just need to accommodate the 50 KB it adds in your package. In case you plan to distribute URL Relayer with your software, please just don’t remove the ‘ReadMe’ file. In the case you are distributing a French version of your soft, then don’t remove the ‘Lisez–moi’ file either. In all cases, don’t modify the program ‘URL Relayer’.
