IMPORTANT NOTE:
Telnet and FTP are insecure as passwords are transmitted in plain text.
We recommend that you consider using SSH (Secure SHell), which is encrypted.
Mac OS does not come with telnet software, so you will have to download one.
We recommend BetterTelnet.
This document demonstrates the basic functionality of the BetterTelnet .
For the sake of explanation, this document uses GW's Academic UNIX server,
Acad (acad.gwu.edu) as an example.
You may replace acad.gwu.edu with any other server that you wish to connect to.
Here is a list of GW's UNIX based servers:
Acad: acad.gwu.edu
Research: research.circ.gwu.edu
Research2: research2.gwu.edu
WWW: www.gwu.edu
Once you have downloaded this file, and installed the software,
follow these directions to telnet to Acad:
1. Startup your Telnet session by double-clicking the application icon:
2. Then go to the File and then Open Connection:
3. When asked for a Host/Session Name, type in:
acad.gwu.edu
and click OK ...
... and in a few seconds, you will see the Acad login screen. Enter your login, press the return, then enter
your password at the password prompt to login.
