500mhz Indigo iMac!
Hello there. I have a question with something. I'm trying to hook up an external CD Rom drive to a Macintosh Performa 476. I'm thinking I might just need a driver but not sure. The Macintosh can see the CD drive as when I use SCSI Info it lists is as a Pioneer CD-Rom DR-124x. However, there is not one sticker on the device itself. I did take it apart and the internal drive is indeed a Pioneer.
I even bought an active terminator just in case but turns out I wont need that. When a CD is inserted I can hear it spin up and the led flashes but the image does not show up on the screen. I am not sure what I am missing that's why I think it might be a driver. Any ideas??

Not all macs or drivers allow playback over SCSI. Look on the drive if it has the RCA type jacks for audio you can hook up to those, or try unplugging the audio cord in the external drive to see if that allows playback. Like internal on a Powermac 6100 you had to hook up the cd roms audio cable to the motherboard for cd audio.

The devices are Toshiba XM-6201B and Sony CDU948S.
Is it as easy as these units simply being too modern/unsupported and requiring (possibly non-existant) 3rd party drivers?

Right. Isn't the CPU soldered to the motherboard? So that would need a motherboard swap, which, surprisingly, isn't a terribly expensive thing. Still, it's probably more expensive than picking up a 400 - 450 MHz Sawtooth or so. But then factor in the cost of shipping, adding a display, etc...

I don't care enough about this iMac to do a motherboard replacement. Right now, on the Apple Discussions thread, we think the cd drive is failing. I posted a WTB/WTT ad on the trading section on these forums for a firewire cd drive. (I opened this mac up recently, and when I pick it up, I feel lost screws jingling) If anyone of you have a spare drive, I'd like to buy it from you, or trade something for it. 
There really is no equal when it comes to CD/DVD Speedtools. It is the best product out there for just about any kind of modern optical hardware on an old Mac. The HardDisk Speedtools seems to be a little less compatible, but if it works with your solid state hardware, you can be sure it will provide the best performance.
Sorry about the bid war. For what it's worth, that's not me. I wouldn't cut you down like that (unless it were something like a prototype.) 
That's an awesome hack! I've got a Quadra 610 and a few 6100s sitting around doing nothing. If those components fit in an LC, they'll definitely fit in one of the 610/6100 style cases. That gives me ideas (like I don't already have enough to do).

Now I will make a decision on the optical drive! Someone on Applefritter is selling them, same price for both DVD-ROM and CD-RW. I'm wondering, should I go with DVD-ROM or CD-RW? I feel like I'll go with the CD-RW because I wouldn't want to watch DVDs, and I wouldn't want to install Tiger.

Since my post above I have 'redeployed' the two Indigo 500 and the Snow DVSE 500 by shuffling around their RAM and drives according to age and processor version:
Snow 10.3.9/1GB/30GB (2000) became Snow 10.2.8/768MB/40GB
Indigo-1 10.2.8/768MB/20GB (2002) became Indigo-1 10.4.10/1GB/40GB
Indigo-2 10.4.10/768MB/20GB (2001) became Indigo-2 10.3.9/768MB/30GB
In retrospect, I should have made Indigo-2 the Tiger Mac, as its video is clearer and brighter. Indigo-1's new (different) 40GB HDD (10k rpm) died within a month. Too hot in the space at those rpm, I suspect, so it now has a 20GB 10k rpm, which is doing famously.
I had not used the DVD-ROM/CD-ROM drive in the Snow much in six-and-a-half years, and it always sounded as if it was labouring mightily, so I replaced it with a CD-R only. I do all burning externally in LaCie drives, as it happens, and use DVD only for data. Even with their rear 'feet' elevated on 18-mm blocks (40mm for the Snow, so as to get its screen vertical in a rack) for more efficient cooling, they are distinctly warm at the top vent (but not hot) in our summer. If you are thinking about regular use of DVD, I'd suggest an external FW drive.

I'm getting the CD-RW drive. I know I'll never use the DVD function, but the CD-RW function might come in handy. I'll probably keep this mac on Mac OS 8.6 (if that is compatible with the mobo I'm getting) or Mac OS 9.2.2. I may install Mac OS X Puma on it, just because I never used it.
