I can't speak to your particular issue (though I've seen similar things on my B&W and a beige G3), but I've had generally good luck with Mandrake/Mandriva Linux on my Pismo.

For what it's worth, Mandriva also has a fairly easy installation process. The installer is "famed" for it's intuitiveness.
