SchoolStat™ ReadMe File Welcome to SchoolStat™ 2! This is a shareware program containing interactive statistical software. Thanks to all the users of earlier versions who have faithfully tested and suggested, leading to this new and improved version containing ANOVA and other goodies for the first time! This version (2.0.4) corrects many initial version 2.0 bugs and hopefully is stable on all Macs running system 6.0.5 and 7. Please try it, and tell me if it doesn't work! SchoolStat is designed primarily for schools (hence the name!), especially teachers who wish to show how probability distributions can be brought alive with Macintosh graphics. It goes much further though, and has a spreadsheet, sorting, arithmetic and mathematical transformations (including N scores), statistical tests including descriptive statistics, confidence intervals, paired and independent comparisons and introductory ANOVA (parametric and non-parametric), correlations, linear regression, contingency tables, and more. It has a graphing facility for scatterplots, histograms, boxplots, stem and leaf diagrams, and pie charts. A log window keeps tally of your analyses. It accepts 30 columns by 1000 data points in each and will perform any of the functions on your own data. It includes both static probability tables (eg normal, inverse normal, t- and F-distribution, chi-square distribution, and others) and active tables which will plot the distributions and fill in the specified (by the user) probabilities as visible areas under the actual curve. These are in real time and have to be seen to be believed! In addition, you can create simulated distributions (saves typing in data for examples!), and perform odds ratio relative risk and sensitivity/specificity computations. A fully interactive help system is available (modeless windows) at all times accessed from the Apple menu (Command-/). I have failed in my attempts to get this published formally (but I still dont know why, since everyone has “liked” it so far!), and so offer it for shareware in the hope that it will be useful to schools, first and second year colleges in statistical instruction. Please feel free to offer me suggestions, via my email, and if you like and use it, please send me the shareware fee of $25 (plus shipping and handling). If there is continuing interest, my next plans were for multiple regression, further ANOVAs and include a more flexible spreadsheet (allowing categorical and ordinal data), but I will hone it into any shape suggested. SchoolStat™ should be considered a competitor for MiniTab or StatView Student but with the friendly Mac interface and without the price tag. Compatibility: It is compatible with Macintoshes with system 6.05 and above, including system 7, and will run on any screen depth, though to get flicker free drawing in the Active Tables, you must have Color QuickDraw installed in your system folder. It runs on Mac Pluses & SEs to PowerBooks, LC IIIs and Quadras. But note…

You may also throw away the I SPY v2 Preferences file from the Preferences folder within your System Folder. TROUBLESHOOTING QUESTIONS & ANSWERS If you're having problems running I SPY School Days on your computer, the following questions and answers may help you. 1. What can I do to get the best performance when running I SPY School Days? Listed below are tips for improving performance. * Quit all, or as many other programs as possible before running I SPY School Days. * Turn off Virtual Memory. If you are running with Virtual Memory on, you may experience slower performance and audio which stutters or skips. If you have enough available RAM ( 16 MB or more ) in your computer, you should turn Virtual Memory off. To turn Virtual Memory off, in the Apple Menu choose Control Panel and then click Memory. In the Memory dialog, select the Off setting for Virtual Memory. You will then have to restart your computer for this change to take effect. * Increase the size of your hard disk cache. If your hard disk cache is set to a value that is too small, you will experience delays when I SPY School Days uses files. This may also cause sound to skip or stutter. To reduce these delays, set your hard disk cache to a higher value. To change the size of your hard disk cache, open the Memory Control Panel. In the Memory dialog, change the setting for your Disk Cache. If you are not sure what to set it to, click the Use Defaults button at the bottom of the dialog. Y…

To reference some other spot in webspace, you need to place what's called an anchor in your text. There are three parts to an anchor. The first part establishes the address or URL | The second part appears in blue for the reader to click on | | | | | | | | <A HREF="http://www.whitehouse.gov">The White House Web</A> is cool. | The third part specifies the end of the anchor. This would appear on the screen like this: The White House Web is cool. That's basically it! Using this technique, you can reference web pages, gopher sites, and files available by anonymous ftp. Some more examples: <A HREF="gopher://gopher.sdsu.edu/Mac/Eudora1.5Docs">Eudora Documentation</A> can be grabbed from the SDSU gopher. And <A HREF="ftp://ftp.apple.com/Mac/comm/HomeMaker">HomeMaker</A> is available on the Apple ftp server. (not really) Eudora Documentation can be grabbed from the SDSU gopher. And HomeMaker is available on the Apple ftp server. Don't forget to terminate your anchors with a </A>. Otherwise, everything to the end of your document will turn blue.

Scientist's Helper User's Manual MacIntosh Version 2.4 for the 512K MacIntosh and Mac XL by William Menke College of Oceanography Oregon State University Corvallis OR 97331 (503) 754-2912 January 4, 1986 A Data Manipulation program designed especially for Scientists and Engineers for performing arithmetic, curve fitting and time series analysis on tabular data Introduction. Scientist's Helper is an interactive data manipulator designed for the kind of tabular data commonly used by scientists and engineers. The fundamental data structure in Scientist's Helper is a table of numbers. These data can be input, saved as files, viewed, plotted, and operated upon mathematically. p Scientist's Helper is basically a command string oriented program. The command set includes graphics, arithmetic, time-series analysis, curve fitting and table management operations. p Scientist's Helper makes full use of the MacIntosh windowing and menu selection functions. For instance, it contains a mouse-driven table editor to facilitate inputing, viewing, and manipulating the table. p The contents of the table can be plotted on the Mac screen and then saved as a MacPaint format file. p Procedures (programs) can be written in RegTab's command language and then executed as if they were Scientist's Helper commands. These procedures can use string variables and a variety of control structures. The Scientist's Helper Table. A Scientist's Helper table can contain up to 4096 rows and 32 columns of single-precision floating-point data. In addition to the usual numbers, table entries can be set to NaN (for not a number). Improper mathematical operations such as division by zero will generate these entries. Thus, Scientist's Helper will not crash from an arithmetic error. Scientist's Helper tables come in two variations. One type is 'interpolated', meaning that the data in column 1 increase linearly with row number. Entries in column 1 of interpolated tabes cannot be altered. The other type is uninter- polated, in which column 1 is no different than any other column. Interpolated tables require less disk storage than uninterpolated ones. A header is associated with the table. The header contains the basic information about the table, and is stored along with the table when a file containing a table is created. The header contains the following information, which are referred to by standard names: rows: the number of rows in the table; cols: the number of columns in the table; title: an 80 character string describing the data; interpolated: a boolean flag indicating whether or not the table is interpolated; colname: a 10 character name for each column; samp, start: the sampling interval and…
