USER’S GUIDE ABOUT RIVERDEEP – THE LEARNING COMPANY Riverdeep – The Learning Company provides highly motivating, dynamic, curriculum-based Internet and CD-ROM learning experiences for the K–12 market. Our products feature interactive, problem-solving approaches and real-world applications that help develop your child’s underlying thinking skills and creativity, while reinforcing important areas of the basic curriculum, such as reading, writing, and mathematics. Since 1980, The Learning Company’s award-winning titles have consistently produced the highest quality of educational software available. Every product under the Zoombinis brand undergoes extensive research and testing, with input from parents, children, and professionals in education. Each product features a precise balance of educational content and entertainment value, so your child has fun while learning! THE USER’S GUIDE This user’s guide is composed of two parts. The first section outlines how to install the program, how the game and its components work, and how to navigate through the activities. The second section, the Parents’ Corner, focuses on the educational makeup of Zoombinis Island Odyssey. ➤ Start with the Installation Instructions to help you set up the game. ➤ Check out The Activities section to learn how to navigate through the game. ➤ See the Parents’ Corner section to review the educational focus of the software. What Is Parents’ Corner? The Parents’ Corner is where parents can find tools to help children integrate what they learn at the computer into their daily lives. Written with the help of parents and educators, the Parents’ Corner describes the skills each activity encourages your child to develop; suggests skill-building activities that you and your child can share; and identifies educational resources to further a child’s experience. El Verbo Simple 2.6 “Spanish Verbs Made Simple” Copyright (c) 1991-2000 Jason Sluzevich. All Rights Reserved Worldwide. USER’S GUIDE Overview….2 About the Browser.…2 About the Dictionary Pane.…2 About the Conjugation Pane….4 About Quizzing….5 Menubar Reference….7 Contacting the Author….10 Page 1 of 10 OVERVIEW This user's guide describes the features of El Verbo Simple. It assumes the user has a basic working understanding of Macintosh computers. The highlights of this manual are also contained within the online help system of El Verbo Simple accessed from the Help menu. ABOUT THE BROWSER After the program loads, the Browser window appears containing the dictionary frame and the conjugation frame as labeled below. ABOUT THE DICTIONARY FRAME At the top of the Browser window is the dictionary frame. It contains the alphabet with a pointer marking the current position in the dictionary. Below the alphabet is a scrolling list of the verbs and definitions. A double black line separates the dictionary frame from the conjugation frame below. • To find a verb or definition: Select whether to display Spanish verbs or English definitions via the popup menu and then begin typing. Notice that the find command is dynamic with each additional letter generating a new list of matching verbs or definitions. The conjugation of the verb with the closest match is displayed below. If dynamic find seems slow on your Mac, you may revert to a more traditional Find command. Select Preferences (under the Edit Menu) and unclick Enable Dynamic Find. When dynamic find is not enabled, you will need to press return or enter to begin a search. • To conjugate a verb: Double click a verb or definition. The full conjugation of the verb appears in the conjugation pane below. Arrow keys may also be used to navigate. • To move to another dictionary division: Click on an alphabet letter; alternatively, you can drag the pointer to the letter of interest. Notice that when searching for a verb or definition, the Browser will automatically jump to the appropriate place in the dictionary. Page 2 of 10 • To expand/shrink the dictionary frame: Move the arrow over the double black line separating the dictionary and conjugation panes. The cursor changes to a hand. Then, click and hold the mouse button to drag the divider up or down to make the dictionary pane smaller or larger. • To view the dictionary using a Spanish-To-English format. Select Display Verbs using the popup menu. With this option, Spanish infinitives are listed first and verbs are alphabetized using the Spanish alphabet. • To view the dictionary using an English-To-Spanish format. Select Display Definitions using the popup menu. With this option, English definitions are listed first and all …
