MicroEMACS Full Screen Text Editor Reference Manual Version 3.11 October 29, 1991 (C)Copyright 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991 by Daniel M. Lawrence Reference Manual (C)opyright 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991 by Brian Straight and Daniel M. Lawrence All Rights Reserved (C)Copyright 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991 by Daniel M. Lawrence MicroEMACS 3.11 can be copied and distributed freely for any non-commercial purposes. Commercial users may use MicroEMACS 3.11 inhouse. Shareware distributors may redistribute MicroEMACS 3.11 for media costs only. MicroEMACS 3.11 can only be incorporated into commercial software or resold with the permission of the current author. Introduction MicroEMACS is a tool for creating and changing documents, programs, and other text files. It is both relatively easy for the novice to use, but also very powerful in the hands of an expert. MicroEMACS can be extensively customized for the needs of the individual user. MicroEMACS allows several files to be edited at the same time. The screen can be split into different windows and screens, and text may be moved freely from one window on any screen to the next. Depending on the type of file being edited, MicroEMACS can change how it behaves to make editing simple. Editing standard text files, program files and word processing documents are all possible at the same time. There are extensive capabilities to make word processing and editing easier. These include commands for string searching and replacing, paragraph reformatting and deleting, automatic word wrapping, word move and deletes, easy case controlling, and automatic word counts. For complex and repetitive editing tasks editing macroes can be written. These macroes allow the user a great degree of flexibility in determining how MicroEMACS behaves. Also, any and all the commands can be used by any keystroke by changing, or rebinding, what commands various keys invoke. Special features are also available to perform a diverse set of operations such as file encryption, automatic backup file generation, entabbing and detabbing lines, executing operating system commands and filtering of text through other programs (like SORT to allow sorting text). History EMACS was originally a text editor written by Richard Stallman at MIT in the early 1970s for Digital Equipment computers. Various versions, rewrites and clones have made an appearance since. This version of MicroEMACS is derived from code written by Dave G. Conroy in 1985. Later modifications were performed by Steve Wilhite and George Jones. In December of 1985 Daniel Lawrence picked up the then current source (version 2.0) and made extensive modifications and additions to it over the course of the next six years. Updates and support for the current version are still available. Commercial support and usage and resale licences are also available. The current program author can be contacted by writing to: …

CODES AND PROCEDURES Activision is a registered trademark of Activision, Inc. © 1995 Activision, Inc. All rights reserved. P/N 3092-05-1 OF THE WARRIOR CASTE T herefore the youngest of them all stood up, And with a voice like amber wine she spoke: “Great sir, now all is clear and seeming well, Yet still there is but one remaining problem; My children, sir, they as of yet unborn, Shall never hear your words so pure and grand.” “You see”’ the great one spoke aloud, “It is your humble kin for whom I write this book. It is the law, our honor bound in hide.” —The Remembrance Passage 156, Verse 4, Lines 24-32 Preface PREFACE This book outlines the codified rules of behavior all members of the Warrior Caste are expected to uphold. It is the very definition of what it means to be a MechWarrior. You must study it well, for ignorance of its contents is grounds for caste demotion. Each passage represents centuries of testing and modification, trial and error. The protocol contained herein has descended from Kerensky’s own words. There are only two books that are older than this one and still being read, The Remembrance and one other. You are there- fore expected to live and die by its instructions. The Warrior Caste is above all others in the Clan. The Laborer, the Technician, the Merchant and the Scientist all look to you for guidance, for you are the most perfect of all perfection. The Warrior is the very top of culture. You are the teacher and the protector, the governor and the parent. As a MechWarrior you will fight in the Touman for the glory of the Clans. There is no higher honor, no greater glory, than to enter combat outnumbered by the largest margin possible and emerge victorious. Your tool in the field is the BattleMech. It is your mount. You will learn to pilot it. You will become part of it and it, you. The BattleMech is designed to translate your will into …

METAL REFERENCE This is METAL Reference , a brief tutorial in programming in METAL. Enjoy, Marin Saric Remember, if you have any comments, questions or bug reports write to sarimar@iit.edu Galactic Dreams Software webpage: <http://www.iit.edu/~sarimar/GDS> If it looks like you already know what the chapter is talking about, keep scrolling down. ================================================= *C* Contents ( a list of all the chapters ) ================================================= *1* BASIC stuff - (a quick start in BASIC language for those who don't know it) *2* Programming Control - (flow of control and other programming things) *3* Number Crunching - (Functions for manipulating numbers, math functions, etc.) *4* String Functions - (Functions for manipulating and creating strings) *5* Console I/O - (Simple Input/Output and other things about the METAL Console) *6* System Stuff - (Interaction with METAL Runtime and MacOS) *7* Files - (File manipulating commands) *8* Graphics - (Graphics.) *9* Sound - (Playing sounds and beeps; speech) *10* QuickTime(TM) - (Commands for using this piece of technology.) *11* Sprites -(For games. A little bit about those things from C64.) *12* Direct Screen Access - (If you render a lot.) ================================================= *1* BASIC stuff ( a quick start in BASIC language for those who don't know it ) ================================================= METAL is an extended variant of BASIC . BASIC stands for Beginners All-purpose Symbolic Instruction Code. What this means is that BASIC is supposed to be a simple language that any one can learn and use to program pretty much anything. If you never programmed in BASIC before, the best thing to do is to get a good book or a tutorial (there is plenty on Internet) on any of the BASIC variants (QBasic, GWBasic, Chipmunk Basic, etc.) . In case you are adventurous, however, here is a quick start in BASIC: print "Hello my man!" input "What is your name?"; name$ print "Nice to meet you, ";name$ This is a BASIC program . Programs are like cooking recipes or laundry-lists. You do them in order. BASIC programs are also executed in order. In METAL, you run programs with command-R, or by choosing Run from the project menu. Here is what this program does when it's run. (The things I type in the computer are underlined . ) Hello my man! What's your name? Marin Nice to meet you, Marin There. Not so bad, huh? print and input are commands . name$ is a variable. In fact it is a string variable, because it contains characters. That's why it has a $ at the end. This makes sense. 'Print' and 'input' tell the computer what to do. Since print is tedious to write all the time (and many programs output a lot of things to the screen), you can also write '?' : ? "hohohoooo..." outputs hohohoooo... Sometimes you want the computer to decide what to do. Let's say you are ma…
