MACINTOSH GUIDE Please make a backup of The Pawn' before using it. Always use the back-up, and preserve the original. Having made a backup do not forget to write-protect it! Loading Boot your system with a Macintosh System Disk and then insert your Pawn disk. Double click The Pawn' disk. When the window appears double click the icon marked The Pawn'. The Pawn will then load. Screen Layout Once loaded you will see that the screen is split into three sections. The first section (top line) contains the following information: On the left is the name of the room you are currently in. The first figure on your right is your score. The second figure is the number of moves made. The second section is the graphics window, consisting of a picture with four scrolls suspended from it. The scrolls can be activated by:- 1) Move the mouse to the scroll you require, 2) Click the button once. 3) Use the mouse to select the command, 4) Click the button. 5) If you do not wish to use any of the commands, simply move the mouse away from the scroll. The picture may be adjusted :- Move the mouse onto one of the scroll 'handles', hold down the mouse button and move the picture up and down. The third section is the text. This is where your commands and the game's responses will appear. Talking to the program To communicate with the program, simply type in a sentence describing what you want to do. When it's waiting for a command, the program displays the '>' prompt and an underline cursor. Once you have typed in your command press the 'RETURN' key. Editing Your Input The following allow you to edit the current line: Normal Mac Mac Plus Left one character Option + s Left arrow Right one character Option + d Right arrow Left one word Option + a Up arrow Right one word Option + f Down arrow Delete left one character Option + w Shift + Left arrow Delete right one character Option + e Shift + Right arrow Delete left one word Option + q Shift + Up arrow Delete right one word Option + r Shift + Down arrow Option key is the key(s) to the left and right of space bar. Re-editing Your Last Line If you discover that you have made a small typing error on your previous line, pressing the '§' key ('~' key on the Mac Plus) will bring it back for editing (Top left on Keyboard).
