Tips for using the Internet Color System Palette from PANTONE® ColorDrive™ Working with the PICS ColorDrive palettes The PANTONE Internet Color System (PICS) palette works just like any other palette within ColorDrive. It is located under the Library menu in ColorDrive along with the other Pantone Libraries, and is the same color system as in Pantone's ColorWeb product. Having the PICS colors accessible from ColorDrive is very useful, because it provides a way for users to use ColorWeb colors in applications that can't access the system Color Picker. You can export the PICS palette to your applications just like any other ColorDrive library. You can also use ColorDrive to find matches between the PICS colors and other PANTONE Colors. It is important to note that, since many applications add black in their color algorithms, Pantone has provided the palettes in CMY format (with K=0 for all colors) instead of RGB. Workflow Strategies Since the colors within PICS have been optimized for use in the creation of Web backgrounds, text, buttons, and objects, you should avoid performing any color management on them. When you export the PICS palette from ColorDrive: 1. Open the Matching Options dialog and disable the monitor and printer profiles. 2. Export the PICS palette to your applications. Follow the instructions in the ColorDrive manual to import the palette into your application. 3. Follow the instructions below regarding how to prevent the colors from dithering when you are using them in your various applications. Workflows are dependent on which applications are used to create the web graphic elements, and which HTML authoring programs are used. Most web designers use traditional graphic design applications to create their web page backgrounds, buttons and objects. Many of these graphic design applications cannot save files in either GIF or JPEG format, so designers need to sometimes use a special workflow, which is described below. In general, where non-dithering graphics (corporate logos, large areas of color, buttons, etc.) are preferred, web graphic elements should be saved in GIF format (JPEG format is usually reserved for images). Graphics using the PICS colors should always be saved using the GIF file format. Here are some general tips for saving to GIF format: 1. When saving GIF graphics, if a choice is offered, the Exact or System palette options should be selected, with 256 colors. You should also make sure that dithering is not enabled. This will ensure that you will use colors in the file that won't dither. 2. When saving as a GIF file from Adobe Photoshop™, you will need to download the GIF89a plug-in for Photoshop from Adobe's Web site, as described below. 3. When saving as a GIF file from Adobe Illustrator™, you will need to download the GIF89a plug-in for Illustrator from Adobe's We…

what Dropper?! what URL?! a4/5 to b1 document converter whipped up by Noah M. ---------------------------------------- DO NOT USE WITH DOCUMENTS EARLIER THAN ALPHA 4. THE PROGRAM WILL HANG. This droplet will ONLY PROCESS what URL?! a4 and a5 documents. ABSOLUTELY DO NOT OVERWRITE YOUR ORIGINAL DOCUMENTS. As a safety precaution, always try to convert to a different folder. If you can't get the drops to be recognized, try rebuilding your desktop. In writing the droplet, I decided to spend only the time necessary to make it functional, to keep it from interfering with the progress of wU?!. The above limitations are the result. This droplet is provided only as a convienience, and there is no guarantee or warranty implied. -1-

1.0b1 Freeware Public Beta written by Noah Mittman and Jim Correia what is it?! The Internet hasn't changed much since it started -- to get things done, you need an array of different applications. But keeping your URLs consistent with all these different applications proved difficult. Clearly, there should be a program just for URLs, which would "talk" to whichever application you wanted it to. That's when what URL?! showed up. what does it do? what URL?! started its life to do only two things, and do them as well as it could: drag-and-drop accept, and launch URLs. Within Netscape bookmarks, your ftp:, news:, and mailto: links all stay within Netscape. What if you wanted to send that mailto: to Eudora? or that news: to Newswatcher? or that ftp: to Anarchie? With what URL?!, this is possible. Not only that, but with what URL?!, you get a more intuitive interface and a richer environment than Netscape. And all for free. Since then, it has grown considerably. And in every step, we've thought "What can we add to this to make it a better URL launcher, without bloating it with excess features?" In 1.0, it's scriptability. Scripting allows what URL?! not only to be used in yet untold ways with current scriptable applications, but it allows it to be used with ones that don't even exist yet. Nifty, eh? And we've included just a sample of what's possible... what are the requirements? • Internet Config 1.1 or greater (current version, as of this writing, is 1.3) what URL?! relies on IC for your helpers settings and launching, and will not work without it. If you don't have it, get it. IC, rightly so, is becoming a worldwide standard for storing and fetching Internet preferences on the Macintosh. • at least 768 KB of available RAM, though 1000kb is recommended. • 68020, 030 or 040 processor (LC versions are fine) or PowerPC processor. WU?! will not run on 68000 systems. • System 7.0 or later. • for PowerPC systems, the Object Support Library, which is part of system System 7.5. For earlier systems, the user must have installed the ObjectSupportLib extension. This is included. • AppleScript and Drag-and-Drop is highly recommended (both are included in System 7.5 and up). See Apple's support site for the extensions for System 7.1 and later. <http://www.support.apple.com/> Version History 1.0b1 Final 1.0 feature set achieved! JC -1- • AppleScript support added • Undo/Redo started and mostly functional • Improved interface • Snazzy new grayscale appearance added • Refinement of document structure completed • Labelling enabled with saved view state • Stationery support added NM • Converter droplet to update old wU?! documents created Known Limitations: • AppleScript dictionary incomplete • Frontier support not yet implemented • Undo not fully implemented for property changes via script and via "Get Info…" dialog 1.0a5rev2 NM & JC • Fixed a problem with WU?! initializing with certain versi…

'W tlbtt lanbs 'Whud the Barbarian and his five companions had been through the ringer. It had taken several months of trial and tribulation, but even the slowest of heroes can make a breakthrough. As they sat in the positions that had become so natural after countless encounters, fighters protecting the more vulnerable of the party, out came the patter of long time companions. "That Dragon sure had a tough hide. Glad I thought of (a-hem) stealing that loose tooth", observed Ferret the thief, who had a habit of blowing her own horn. Morgan the Smith couldn't let that lay. "Maybe, but without my skill, the weapon that distracted the beast might never have been forged. Next time, you might not be so lucky." "Enough of this", grunted Thud, who was weary and very nearly famished. "Now that we've got the thing, what do we do with it?" Being more practical minded, he at least hadn't forgotten about the (now toothless) Dragon that might be turning up at any minute. Joseph (former Shaman turned Healer) brought up the point, "Friends, we are not in very good shape. To confront anything more vicious than an angry gopher might prove disastrous. Our descent of the hidden tower has left us weakened. Perhaps a retreat to the Barracks might afford us some rest ... and refreshment, and make us all the more stout-hearted for our next adventure." Flitz the Wizard stared down the corridor and spoke up. "A commendable sentiment but with two flaws. The first is that we have used our last homing wand when we encountered the Demon on the floor above. The second is that our friend the Dragon has found us and looks mightily displeased. RUN!" It was a suddenly revitalized band of adventurers which turned tail and headed for the far end of the corridor. They slowed as they approached the dead end, but much to their surprise, it slid to one side, affording them entrance into another dark interior. Inward they plunged, only to backpedal suddenly when confronted with a gaunt, black robed figure before them, clothed in black robes and gesturing wildly. Motes and clouds trailed from his glowing fingertips; all about him appeared Demons of every shape and size. Thud realized that though the flood of demons was bad enough, his first priority had to be to plug the source. Wielding his great Sword of Heroes, he prepared to cleave the necromancer from crown to crotch. He caught the first whiffs of demons breath, but swung the ancient sword downward with a mighty stroke. The Dark Sorcerer of Malokor fell to the east and the west (at the same time). Without a moment to savor his triumph, Thud joined in battle with the Demons. By the time they were finished, only Thud and Joseph remained alive and standing. Joseph wanted to breathe life back into his fallen comrades, but his manna was spent. Then he noticed the bright glow in the corridor behind the fallen Sorcerer... ~t last. tl.Jt ~taff of 1tft bas bttt…
