ASCII CHART DA 4.2 DOCS Purpose: ASCII Chart (AC) is a tool that makes it easy to see all characters in a font at a glance, display a character’s ordinal value and what it considers the best way to generate it, copy specific character(s) to the clipboard, and send font samples to a file or printer. Note that while characters from the selected font are displayed on the chart, Geneva is used for character information on the right side of the window. Installation: System 6.0.x users (or those using earlier systems) may install AC into their System file using the Font/DA Mover or open it with a utility like Suitcase II or Master Juggler. System 7 users should open the suitcase file and drag AC out of it. AC may then be placed into the Apple Menu folder or System file, or used as a “double-clickable” application. The suitcase file can be trashed once AC has been dragged out of it. System 7.0 should display a cool, custom icon for AC. If it uses a generic icon, you may need to change AC’s file Type to “dfil” and file Creator to “ASC4” using ResEdit, DiskTop, Vantage, McSink, or any other utility capable of altering “Finder Information.” Then rebuild the desktop (and lose “Get Info” comments…) or try copying AC to another disk, delete the original, and then copy back. Basic Usage: Choosing the “ASCII Chart” from the Apple menu causes a window to be opened and adds the “Chart” menu to the menu bar. This menu contains three hierarchical menus, and the names of currently installed fonts. The window is filled with a chart displaying all 256 chars or a font sample, depending on what was in use the last time AC was used. Type a character, click on a character’s cell, or paste up to 512 characters from the clipboard. Option-click on a character to copy it to the clipboard or use the standard cut/copy commands to copy the currently selected character. Hold down the shift key when cutting/copying to append a character to existing clipboard text. Pasting more than one character causes each character to highlight in sequence. Click the mouse or press a key after a paste to abort this display. Hold down the shift key during a paste to speed the display. Press the command key to display the currently selected character at 72 point; depress the caps lock key to show the base line. Click on the right side of the window (not on the chart) to display basic usage info; shift-click to see the info displayed in the selected font and size. Click in the zoom box when the chart is shown to resize the window to show/hide the character information area on the right. Hold down the shift, command, or option key when clicking in the zoom box to move the window to the upper left of the main window. Page 2 Menu Items: Choose a font’s name in the Chart menu to cause that font to be displayed. Press command-plus to choose the next font in the menu or command-minus for the previous font; add the shift key to choose the last or…

Tommy Hann, Consulting Engineer for Apple Computer, wrote the document and comments may be sent to hannt@apple.com. Apple Software Restore (ASR) is an Apple utility for restoring a standard software configuration to a Macintosh. With ASR and another utility called Disk Copy, you can make a restore image from a working Macintosh and later restore that image to other Macintoshes, assuming they are of the same model. For example, you might need to configure a large number of iMacs with the same Mac OS and certain applications that you have licenses for. Using ASR and Disk Copy, you could configure all of these Macintoshes with the exact same configuration so that the software is the same on each. Basically, you are creating a full backup of one machine and restoring it to other like machines. The first step of this process is to create a restore image (similar to a backup) using Disk Copy. Once you have created the image, you must then determine how to distribute that image using ASR. The simplest example of distributing the image is to create a bootable CD containing ASR and the restore image. To restore the image to a computer, you would boot from the CD and launch ASR. However, as more and more information is being stored on Macintosh hard disks, a CD isn’t large enough in some cases to hold an entire image. In this case, an external storage device such as a FireWire Disk Drive could be used as an alternative. Finally, servers can be used to store and distribute the images. The following sections describe each of these distribution me…

Welcome to… Danny Goodman's AppleScript Handbook Quick Reference Apple Guide Copyrighted Freeware. ©1995 Danny Goodman. All Rights Reserved. Overview This quick reference is an Apple Guide that provides on-screen access to Appendix A of my AppleScript book (Danny Goodman's AppleScript Handbook, 2nd edition, [Random House]), plus additional Finder scripting reference data that I find useful. This Apple Guide is intended solely as a refresher when you need that quick reminder about the precise spelling or syntax requirements of a command or language structure. You will also find a facility for transferring most syntax definitions from the Guide to your AppleScript script editor. System Requirements As of this writing (early September 1995), Apple Guide runs only on Macintoshes equipped with System 7.5 or later. An improved version of the Apple Guide system extension is planned to not only improve the speed of Apple Guides appearing on screen, but to allow the use of Guides on Macs equipped with System 7.0 and 7.1. Since you must be scripting with AppleScript to be interested in this quick reference in the first place, I'll assume you also have the requisite AppleScript system software installed on your Mac. The other significant requirement for using this Guide to its fullest is the installation of a scripting addition (OSAX) called “Jon’s Commands” by Jon Pugh. This OSAX is available from every AppleScript-related on-line library, as well as on the disk accompanying the 2nd edition of my AppleScript Handbook. Be sure this OSAX is copied to the Scripting Additions folder located inside your Extensions folder. Installation Drag the “AS Quick Reference” file to the same folder that contains your AppleScript script editor. The next time you start your script editor program, the Help menu will contain an item, “AppleScript Quick Reference,” which will start this Guide. If you write AppleScript scripts in multiple programs (e.g., Scripter and HyperCard), you can place the Guide file in the folder of one of those programs, and place an alias to the Guide file in the other folder. Consult the first two items in the Guide's access window listing for further instructions and tips about using the Guide. Background This project was an experiment to stretch Apple Guide into the role of a reference publishing medium (and, while I am very familiar with every command that comes with AppleScript, Apple's own OSAXen, and the scriptable Finder, I don't remember every little parameter—I often need quick help myself). While this Guide may not win any awards from Apple--it is an unconventional application of the technology--I find having this reference material handy on screen to be very convenient. Once you use the Guide for awhile, you will probably agree with me that there are some shortcomings in the Apple Guide technology for the amount of information presented in this Guide. I am sharing this experience with Apple in the hope that these issues wi…

The Amazon Basin is enormous — almost as big as the entire United States (not counting Alaska). It extends from the highest reaches of the Andes Mountains all the way across the continent of South America. At its mouth is an island that is almost twice as big as Vermont. The Amazon River makes every other river in the world look small. In May, when the river is at its highest, the Amazon contains more water than the world’s eight next largest rivers combined. The Amazon is so deep that ocean- going vessels can travel all the way upriver to Manaus, more than 900 miles from the river’s mouth. It is so wide — more than 30 miles across in some places — that you can’t always see both shores. Amazon wildlife is the most diverse on Earth. There are more than 2,500 species of birds. …
