NOTES on BRAND OTHELLO © Algorithm: Anders Kierulf © Interface: Valerie Kierulf This program is shareware. If you keep it, please send $10 to: Anders & Valerie Kierulf, Department of Computer Science University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, NC 27514 Brand Othello: can serve both as a strong Othello opponent as well as a tutorial aide. These notes do not explain the rules of Othello. They simply give a brief summary of the several useful and flexible features of the Brand Othello program. To make a move: simply click on the desired square. Buttons 1. Left arrow: Takes back previous move. May be used to step back as far as the beginning of a game. Allows you to try a different move, if you feel you made a mistake. 2. Right arrow: Moves forward one move. Works in conjunction with left arrow button to allow you to move backwards and forwards to replay a sequence of moves or an entire game. 3. Evaluate: Clicking on this initiates a display of the search path that Brand uses to determine its next move. You can follow its selection of possible moves and the relative weights it assigns to them. 4. To square: To use this button, first click on it and then click on any occupied square. The board will immediately shift to the position existing when the move to that square was first made. Be careful not to click on an empty square on the game may "freeze." 5. Options: Clicking on this opens up a window that gives you several options, including starting a new game, whether to play Black or White, and the level of skill. Note that it plays extremely slow at the higher skill levels, and that tournament level cannot be selected. 6. Legal moves: Clicking on this results in a display of the locations of all your currently legal moves. 7. Play: The most common option - used when you wish to play against the computer. 8. Enter moves: Used when you wish to play against another human, or when you simply wish to play out a sequence of moves. 9. Enter stones: To use this, first click on it and then click on any square (or set of squares) on the board. It will add (or remove) white (or black) disks to each square clicked on. This permits the set-up of any arbitrary position. Note that you can switch between Play, Enter moves, or Enter stones at any time. Thus, for example, you can set up a position with Enter stones and then switch to Play to play against the computer from that point. The File menu This menu has some additional options, including the ability to Save games and print out Transcripts of games. NOTES on OTHELLO/REVERSI ◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊ The following is an excerpt from the book, Othello: Brief & Basic by Ted Landau, a 64 page Handbook on Othello strategy and tactics, complete with over 100 diagrams. Brickoids Millenium Document created 5.10.99 Brickoids is a computer game designed and created by Soth Development, an Icelandic Shareware games development group (See Soth Dev. Readme). The original version of Brickoids was released early 1997. This edition, Brickoids Millenium, is in many ways superior to former versions. It includes higher-quality sounds, considerably improved graphics and drum'n bass music in the background. Brickoids is approximately 4000 lines of code and a lot of work has been put into it so we ask you to support shareware and register our other games, even if this one is freeware. If you feel obliged to show your appreciation then please send $15 to Ken Winograd, the programmer who made the original Brickles game, to whom we owe this entire game concept. You can contact him at ken@winograd.com. Brickoids Requires: * 640 x 480 resolution or better * 8-bit colour (256 colours) * 68040 or PowerPC processor * System 7 or later * About 4MB of RAM Brickoids Help Q = If you press this button the game will stop the game in progress and exit to the splash screen. If you press the button again it will activate the "Quit" option in the splash screen, exiting the program. Spacebar = When you start the game the ball is stuck to the paddle so you'll have to release it by pressing the spacebar. You can also press the mouse button. P= By pressing the P button you will pause the game. It will remain paused until you press it again. Soth Development can be contacted in the following ways: Visit our website on the Internet: http://soth.zoneit.com Contact us via E-mail: sothdev@soth.zoneit.com Send us Snail Mail: Soth Development Oldugata 4 101 Reykjavik Iceland Credits Artwork and Design: Sveinbjorn Thordarson Programming: Thorlindur Thorolfsson Website & Graphics: Brynjar Eiriksson Sound Effects: Olafur "Hass" Gunnarson Music: Bjarki Fannar Atlason We would like to thank the following: Apple Computers Inc. -- for creating an excellent development platform. Coca-Cola Company -- for keeping us awake through those long, bleak winter nights of hard work... Rammstein -- for making a great contribution to the metal music industry. Rage Against The Machine -- for keeping our programmer angry, agressive and to the point. And finally..... Freyr Bjornsson -- for making absolutely no contribution to this game whatsoever. Version History Document created 5.10.99 Ok, just in case any of you are interested in a version history of this game.... 1997 - 0.9b Brickoids beta version. No sound or music and poor graphics. 1998 - 1.0 Brickoids 1.0 released. A few sounds added and the Pause bug fixed. 1998 - 1.0b Brickoids Final released…

Hommel Apple IIGS version programmed by R. Harnish Amiga version programmed by C. Barrett and C. Smith Published by Artworx Software Company, Inc. _ Copyright 1983, 1986, 1987, 1989, 1990 all rights reserved. BRIDGE 6.0 is a bridge-playing program in which the player is joined by : a computer partner against two computer opponents. The program consists of two parts; bidding for the contract, and playing out the hand. | The bidding in BRIDGE 6.0 is Standard American, five card major. The program recognizes the Blackwood and Stayman conventions. If youare a bridge novice, we strongly recommend that you first read any of the excellent books on the subject. Artworx also publishes a bridge tutorial, COMPUBRIDGE, which is an ideal way to use your computer to learn to play bridge. | LOADING: Insert the BRIDGE 6.0 disk and select the BRIDGE icon. You can also run the program by booting your computer directly with the BRIDGE 6.0 disk. Amiga users with only 500K must boot the disk directly. Artworx does recommend that you make a back-up copy of the BRIDGE 6.0 disk and that you put the original disk away for safe-keeping. We do ask that you respect our copyright on this software by using any back-up disk on your own computer, for your personal use and enjoyment. HARD DISK INSTALLATION: To install BRIDGE 6.0 onto a hard disk, create a folder and copy (drag) the BRIDGE file (icon) to that folder. Amiga users should follow the instructions given in the README file on the Bridge 6.0 disk. Apple IIGS users must copy the BRIDGE6.SYS 16 file and C subdirectory to the hard drive's main directory. BRIDGE 6.0 “shuffles” the cards by using the random number generator in your computer. This assures you of a virtually limitless number of hands to play. In addition you can enter your own hands and save them to disk for replay at a later time. The program starts by displaying the main screen which provides the following choices from the menu bar: OPENING HAND: (Displayed under the PLAY Menu for the GS). You can elect to be dealt a hand which has at least 13, 17 or 20 high card/dis- tribution points. Select the minimum point count you would like by clicking on the ap…

The paper defaults in the printer drivers have been set to A4 paper. The British system can be identified by the user by the word "wastebastket" that is substituted for the U.S. word "trash" on the desktop.
