CharView version 1.0 beta 7 What is this? This application shows up all printing characters of selected font (255 ASCII chars). What needed to run it? There are versions for 68K and PPC Macs which running MacOS 8 and up (or 7.x with Appearance installed). How it woks? When you start up this applicatin you see main dialog with all printing characters at left, zoomed view of selected character (first left of three shown), font selection menu, edittext field and two buttons at right. To get character that you need, follow this steps: 1. Select needed font. 2. Locate needed character on the field using mouse (just point to it), or keyboard (cmd+arrows). 3. Selected character will be zoomed at right and copied to edittext field. 4. Select it from edittext field and copy to clipboard. You are done! At the top of the zoomed character you will see it's keyboard representation and at the bottom - it's ASCII decimal code. How much? This application costs $0 USA. How to Use This Manual You can turn the page by clicking on the right-arrow of the scroll bar at the bottom of the window. You can also turn to any page using the "Contents" menu at the top of the screen. While viewing a page, you can scroll up and down on the page by using the vertical scroll bar at the right of this window, in the usual way. If you have a printer, you can print this manual with the "Print..." option in the File Menu. On the second dialog box that appears, you can choose which pages you would like to print, or click "Print All" to print the entire manual. CheckMate Manual Page 1 Checkmate Requirements Any Macintosh can play CHECKMATE except the original Macintosh 128K or 512K. You need at least 1 megabyte of memory. Additional memory will be used to increase playing strength. A modem is required for modem play and both computers must run either CHECKMATE or Battle Chess from Interplay or MacPlay. Hard disk installation CHECKMATE may be installed on a hard disk. Before you do anything else, write protect your master CHECKMATE floppy disks. 1. Make a new folder on your hard disk, named “Checkmate.” 2. Copy all files from both CHECKMATE disks into the new folder. Running CHECKMATE from a hard disk Turn on your hard disk and Macintosh. When the System finishes loading, open the folder that contains CHECKMATE, and double-click on the CHECKMATE icon. Running CHECKMATE from floppy disks Turn on your Macintosh and insert your System disk in a disk drive. When the System finishes loading, eject the System disk and insert CHECKMATE disk #1. Double-click on the CHECKMATE icon. You will be asked several times to switch disks while loading the game; if you have more then one disk drive, you can insert the requested disks into your second or third drive. Entering the Code When you launch CHECKMATE for the first time, you will be prompted to enter a move of a previously played chess game. Enter the correct move and press Return to begin play. Checksum is a program that allows anyone to quickly and easily calculate file checksums. Briefly, a checksum is a number calculated for a file by performing some operation on all the characters in the file, such as adding up all the character values and generating a total. A checksum is useful for testing the integrity of a file — the calculated checksum can either be compared against a previously calculated checksum, or the checksum can be compared against a checksum for a file on another computer. Checksum is the easiest way to compare two files on Macintosh computers (either on the same machine or different ones), to tell if they are identical or not! If the checksum values match, there is an extremely good chance the files are identical. The choice of checksum algorithm affects the chance that two files are identical if their checksums match. How to play a multi-player game of Chess with ChessWorks: ChessWorks allows you to play a multi-player game of Chess with someone over the internet. All you have to do is connect to each other via the connect button. After you press the connect button you will be presented with a dialog box that gives you the choice to either 'Host' or 'Connect'. Somebody must choose 'Host' and the other person must then connect to the host's IP address (Note - if you choose 'Host' your IP will be displayed in the address field). Both players must be on the same port when connecting. When the connection is established a chat window will pop up where you can chat to each other. How do I connect to a tracker to find games? All you have to do to connect to a tracker is go under the File menu and choose 'Tracker' or press command+T. This brings up the Tracker Window. Then you click on connect and enter your tracker address (or use the default) and your desired nickname to appear to all other users on that tracker. What is this 'Page' thing in the Chat window? The 'Page' button will "page" the other player or send them a wake up call. Pressing the button activates a sound on the other players computer. You are limited to 1 page every 5 seconds. A little bit on saved games: The player that saves the game should load the game and if the host should host again for best results. If you don't have the same setup as before your loaded game might be slightly altered such as you switch sides or the next turn might be wrong. Saving Server/Player Info: To save server/player info (name,port,address) just choose 'Save Info...' from the popup menu in the connection window. Then save it to a folder called 'Servers' that is in the same folder as the ChessWorks application. Now you can choose your saved information from the popup menu to restore your settings. Creating Custom Board and Piece Sets: ChessWorks allows for custom board and pieces sets to be used. To create a new board make an 8x8 grid of boxes each 32x32 pixels. When making a piece set imagine an 8x2 grid of 32x32 boxes. All white is transparent in the pieces.. Then place your pieces inside of those boxes in the following order. The top row is the bottom set (white) and the bottom row is the top set of pieces (black). The pieces must be in this order: Pawns, Rook, Knight, Bishop, Queen, and King.
