Review: The Journeyman Project Reviewed by Neil Shapiro T y p e : Puzzle-Oriented Graphic Adventure P u b l i s h e r : Presto Studios Inc. Retail Price: $ 9 9 . 9 5 Mail Order: $ 6 9 . 9 5 R e q u i r e s : Mac II or better, 256 colors on 13" or larger, 5 MB RAM and CD-ROM drive P r o t e c t i o n : Off-disk copy-protection IMG Rating: √ √ √ √ 1 / 2 THE JOURNEYMAN PROJECT from Presto Studios is the latest entry into the Macintosh CD-ROM gaming sweepstakes to see what company will turn this revolutionary technology into a winning formula. Journeyman features wonderful digitized graphics, sound and animation, an involving story line and a puzzling plot. Is it not just a story about the future but the actual future of gaming itself? F u t u r e H i s t o r y . First, let's consider the story background. The game opens up in the city of Caldoria in 2318—about two hundred years after a unified world government was established. In 2308 the first contact was made with an alien race who gave Earth ten years to consider their Galactic proposal of having humanity join with them. Now, the ten year waiting period is up and the aliens are asking for a decision. But the decision is being influenced by the past—and the past is being changed. Time travel is a working discovery and some force is using it to change past history in order to make peaceable settlement with the aliens less possible. The player takes the part of a secret agent in the time-traveling Temporal Protectorate. The mission is to restore the time track to what it should be by thwarting the changes made in time before they are made! So far, interesting enough—but that could be the synopsis for just about any game on the scale from putrid to let's-not-eat-today-and-play. Any game player worth their scoreboard knows that the proof lies in how the graphics, interface, and "feel" of a game all add up. T h e E y e s H a v e I t . Graphics are the first thing in Journeyman that leap out at you, grab you by the lapels and say in a sort of excited, slobbering voice "This is IT! You're going to like THIS!" Review: The Journeyman Project Page 29 IMG 1x03 • 93_04 Too many games on CD-ROM and on one of those fifty-floppies in a box packages go for graphics that are bright and colorful and with-it and totally unbelievable. But the artists behind Journeyman have obviously studied their craft and would be capable of, say, storyboarding the next Ridley Scott movie. Better, the graphics all work together in an interactive manner that adds to the game's feel of being almost a virtual reality. B i o c h i p s are used by cyborg player to add functionality to their implants. As an agent of the Temporal Protectorate you have a cyborg bioattachment on your left eye called a Biotech Interface. Your Biotech Interface, depending on what biochips you have plugged into it, will display on a pop-up viewscreen below the main window all sorts of …

Strategy & Tactics: Gabriel Knight Submitted by Steven Wall Note: This is a complete walkthrough of Gabriel Knight. Day One St. George’s Book Shop Every morning read the paper by the coffeepot for hints on things to do every day. On the table you can find a magnifying glass and tweezers. On the top left shelf of the bookshelves on the back wall you can find a book by “Heinz Ritter.” On the right top shelf of the bookshelves there is a book on Snakes. Read both books. On the book shelf under the window you can find a German/English dictionary. Open the cash register and get a gift certificate. Use the “Question” icon on Grace, and ask her for messages. This will put the Police Station and Grandma Knight’s place on your map. Later in the day, you will need to ask Grace to do some research on Malia Gedde. (This triggers the end of the day.) Grandma Knight’s house. Use the “Question” icon on Grandma Knight, and ask about “Family” and “Family Members.” This will put the cemetery on the French Quarters Map. Go to the attic and take the sketchbook. Put the “operate” icon on the clock. You will see a close-up of the clock. Move the hands to 3:00 with the move icon. Move the outer circle until the dragon is at the top of the clock. Use “Operate” on the windup key. This will open the bottom drawer of the clock. Take the photo and letter. Open your inventory to look at the photo and read the letter. Reading the letter adds “Heinz Ritter” in Grandma’s topic and adds “shattenjager” to Global topics. Go ask Grandma about Heinz Ritter. Police Station Ask the desk sergeant about Mosely. He will give you an envelope from Mosely. Go into inventory and open the envelope to reveal a murder photo and Mosely’s graduation picture. Mosely’s Office Ask Mosely about the patterns at the crime scene, this will put “Other Patterns” in the topic menu. He will tell you about six other partial patterns. Ask about them. This will let you know that Officer Franks has the “case file.” Go talk to Officer Franks and have her pull the case file for you. IMG November 1994 Page 159 Thu, Apr 22, 2021 How can I get a copy of the Crime Scene file? Request another photo of Mosely with you for your book. Officer Franks will come in to take the photo. At this point use the dialogue choice to leave the room, (Hold on a sec while I go check my hair.) Once you leave, take the file out of the in box at officer Franks desk, and make a photo copy. (This puts veve copy in your inventory.) Then go back in for your picture with Mosely. If you steal the file, officer Franks will no longer talk with you. Jackson Square Go to the Northwest room of Jackson Square, and walk close to the mime. You will notice he follows whoever walks closely to him. Get the mime to follow you by walking up to him. It is somewhat difficult to make him follow you. Every time someone walks close enough he will follow them, so avoid other people if yo…

Journeyman features wonderful digitized graphics, sound and animation, an involving story line and a puzzling plot. Is it not just a story about the future but the actual future of gaming itself? Future History. But the artists behind Journeyman have obviously studied their craft and would be capable of, say, storyboarding the next Ridley Scott movie. Better, the graphics all work together in an interactive manner that adds to the game's feel of being almost a virtual reality. As an agent of the Temporal Protectorate you have a cyborg bioattachment on your left eye called a Biotech Interface. Your Biotech Interface, depending on what biochips you have plugged into it, will display on a pop-up viewscreen below the main window all sorts of information. The Interface comes with game saving functions and ones are soon added to help you time-travel, map, and track enemies through different time z…
